Description
Other resourcesI got really tired of taking so long coming up with a even remotely decent pose, so I am going to take the bull by the horns and start studying the construction of poses a bit more thoroughly. You can expect more studies like this in the coming days.
The idea behind this is to avoid starting with the details. Instead, the concept is something like this:
I want to thank so much for providing the poses that I used as reference for this. They are SO helpful!

Hahah Love it. Especially the bottom middle one. Priceless! Thanks for this very helpful resource
I especially like how you indicated the joints and the like so everyone can get a sense of the physical process that should be done.

Thank you! I do this very much for my own sake as well, since I have had the bad habit of starting with details, missing the whole composition. While it's probably not a good idea to go all technical, as long as you do not have an awesome ability to subconsciusly draw awesome poses, it's good to have a wireframe to work from

This is exactly my problem too - Even if you get all the proportions right, if the pose is unconvincing or uninteresting the picture will end up being average at best. Actually, if you mess up all the proportions, but manage to produce a dashing, interesting pose, you are far better off. I am the analytical kind of person ("if I get all the proportions correct, the picture will be good, right? Right!?"), and therefore I find these facts hard to absorb, but I am working at breaking free from my bad habits

That is so true! I draw them just standing but i always love to make it cool looking or sumthing! But im practicing day by day. Even if i have to stare at myself in the mirror a lot of times and then my family makes fun of me... well ya know, it is how i learn! practice makes perfect. Thanks again!
P.S. I love how u replied with a long comment/reply! I love when people do that it makes me feel as if they really read what i said
. Plus i hate replying ,"Yep" "Ya" "Haha no prob" "Yeah no problem" and so on. Thanks again!

I've been guilty of throwing one liners at people, too I try to answer everyone that is kind enough to comment, even if all they say is "nice", or something like that. However, I love to discuss drawing, so when I see an opening I can get quite "chatty"
I wouldn't do this myself, since I am afraid of the camera, but have you tried asking someone to take pictures of you posing? that way you can get pretty much any poses that you want. Alternatively, perhaps you can persuade someone to pose for you, but people always seem to shy away from such requests xD

Yeah... i try to not do one liners either.
Oh and the taking-a-pic-of-you-posing thing is kinda what i have been wanting to do... but im shy to do so u know? Like im afraid if someone laughs at me for the dramatic faces i do or stuff... or how i model.... i try to have more confidence in me but i think i torture myself in a way. I think i have been torturing myself lately. I always end up crying. Why do i do this?! Grrrrr! I try to stop but i guess i have low self esteem or something. I dunno...

Hiding, being scared of showing anything I do to anyone (>.<), but since joining deviantART I feel a lot more comfortable sharing what I do. It feels like the people here share a common goal to get better at drawing, and to be able to discuss these things is very helpful to me.

This is a great thing you're doing.
This inspires me to want to do this as well.
I remember doing an exercise like this when I went to my art class in college.
I need to remember that this is what we all need to do to build a basic body.
I also think it's a good thing to look at pictures.
It helps to create that balance.
Thank you for providing these because it helps people look at how a basic human being is formed.
This is an instant fave for me and thanks once more.
You're awesome.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I think this is a good exercise for me and probably for anyone. I usually "manage" to compensate for lacking poses with details, but that's clearly not a good way to do it. Spending as much time as I do to even get a basic pose from scratch without reference is not ok, and that's why I want to fight this flaw of mine.
I'm eager to see you do some poses as well. Your art is inspiring

I do the same thing.
I work for too long and too hard on original poses.
This is something I need to break as well.
Looks like we have a common goal here.
And your art is inspiring too.(Thank you for the compliment) ^__^
Glad we could help one another out.

Yeah, that's what I've been trying to do since I can't really come up with my own poses without them looking incredibly...off. but I found a really great website where you can pick poses to draw, or it'll generate random poses for you.

I've been looking at such websites too, and over the years I've downloaded thousands of reference photos from different sites. I am going to lean towards using stuff here from DA more now though, as it's easy to give credit where credit is due. Stuff I've downloaded from google years ago is kind of hard to find the author of

Haha true true. most of the time when I use references from the internet, I'll just make sure those are personal sketches and stuff that I specifically don't post because I know I won't remember who to credit.

Thank YOU for providing such amazing reference pictures. I hope it's ok with you that I do this (as long as I credit you, of course). My goal with these drawings is to provide an idea of how you can analyze poses and break them down into simple stick figures, thus making it easier to reverse engineer the concepts when you draw original poses of your own.

I've been trying to break down the body into cones, cylinders, spheres and cubes, lately. How much do you think that applies to how you draw your characters, and how do you break those to make them look even more realistic and dynamic?
You look like you could make a pretty cool proportions guide sometime in the future. (If you haven't already. I haven't really looked through your gallery. Heheh.)

StyrbjornAndersson In reply to EndArtica [2013-01-17 07:10:20 +0000 UTC]
I am definitely going to consider doing a proportions guide in the future, although if there is one thing I can recommend, it's focusing on just drawing poses and trying to analyze what makes them appealing. I fell into the "proportions trap" long ago, and have had (and still have) a hard time to free myself from the focusing on the rules and proportions of the body, rather than what makes the body look good

EndArtica In reply to StyrbjornAndersson [2013-01-17 08:48:06 +0000 UTC]
I understand that. I'm always having trouble with that too. Haha
But I would like some kind of set of general rules so that I can follow (and break), so that I know how to make them consistently. Consistency is the worst thing!

They look really good! I've heard artists talking about after you study the construction of poses long enough, you've got kind of like a 3D model in your head to make up poses from.

I really hope this is true. It would make sense though. The same applies when playing a instrument - if you practice enough you will be able to perform without analyzing each note you play.
