Description  Number 5690 Leander was built in 1936 at Crewe Works and named after the Royal Navy warship HMS Leander, which itself was named after the mythical Greek hero of the same name. He was based at 5A Crewe North Shed from then until 1947, whereupon he was transferred to 22A Bristol Barrow Road at nationalization. It was during this time he was renumbered as 45690. He was withdrawn from service in 1964 and sold to Woodham Brothers of Barry and rescued by Brian Oliver. He was sold to several owners including the Severn Valley and East Lancashire Railways until finally being owned by Chris Beet, the National Railway Museum's Engineering and Rail Operations Manager, and being operated by West Coast Railway Company out of the former Carnforth Motive Power Depot.
