The little engines exchanged presents with one another, but Proteus was left out.
"I'm sorry, Sir Handel." She said, glumly. "I don't have a present to give you." To her surprise, Sir Handel smiled and replied.
"I already have my present."
"Where? What is it?" Proteus wondered. Sir Handel chuckled.
"You." He said, plainly. "You are my present. You're wonderful, cheerful, and I smile when I see you. Sometimes, presents aren't things, they're people or engines we know that make us happy. I'm so happy that I've had the opportunity to make friends with you and teach you all sorts of things about how to be a really useful engine. Just being here, you're the best gift I've ever been given, thank you." Proteus was tearing up as he told her this. She had never been this honored before in her short life thus far.
"I...Thank you." She said. The engines were all touched by Sir Handel's gratefulness, and they all had a wonderful Christmas together.
