Location: Unknown oasis, Nile State, Sudan (ولاية نهر النيل, جمهورية السودان)

On our way from Kerma to Old Dongola, we crossed part of the Nubian desert. The appearance of a sand dune unforseen by our drivers forced us to make a detour, and we ended up in a small grove of palm-trees with a rather large, dried-mud well. As we were investigating this, the well's keeper emerged from the trees, like a grove spirit, and marched straight at us, shaking each one of us by the hand with determination. He appears to have been a bit worried about a group of strangers near his well, but he was not unfriendly, let alone hostile. He also accepted to be photographed, naturally (or we would not have done it).

The well itself is connected to a motorise pumping system, but as a structure, looks quite old: the well held no actual water at the time. The man wears the classical gallabeyya (classical arabic: jellabiya; جلابية‎) above a set of loose trousers.
