Description Here is the last of the tutorials I took pictures for a while ago at school, for putting on and wearing wigs.

This is the one about how to put on a wig (after, of course, the pincurling and the wigcap business). For this part, you'll probably want to have a friend on hand to help you get it on, it just makes everything easier (trying to hold a wig in the front, while pulling it down in the back is not an easy thing to do on your own).

For the pins, I have found these via Sally Beauty & Supply:

Smaller hair pins - [link]
Larger hair pins - [link] (you do not use these for putting on a wig cap - these are for the actual wig itself, but I wanted to include the link for ease of ordering!)

Unless you're wearing an extremely light colored wig (i.e. a white wig), always get black pins (bobbi pins and hair pins) because they won't reflect light - they just look like the roots of hair.

Again, a thank you goes out to ~MedeaHiasobi for helping me with this (it's her hands with blue fingernails you see in the pictures & in the images ) ~ you should go watch her, too!

pi-kyu [2007-10-18 15:14:07 +0000 UTC]

This is really helpful, thank you! Just a question though... can regular pins work too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to pi-kyu [2007-10-18 23:06:18 +0000 UTC]

You could, but you really shouldn't. This is because ther eis one nubby end and one flat end on bobbi pins, where as wig pins are "U" shaped. These hold into the wig, and keep it from slipping, where you can't really put in bobbi pins on the side, or use them to twist up hair like the wig pins can

They're pretty cheap, so htey're worth picking up - Sally's Beauty Supply has them (if you're in the states) and I've even seen them at a few Wal-Green's in the past

Yeah; I've got really dark brown hair that comes to my neck and it's really hard to try and hide it under a blonde Demyx wig XD

I'm going to start looking for all the gear you recommend immediately. ^^

taeliac In reply to mittenkitten [2007-09-08 15:50:13 +0000 UTC]

It shouldn't be too difficult to do, but getting the "fly aways" around the edges may become the biggest problem, and it's just going to take some practice to get all of those

Almost everything on there can be purchased at a Sally's Beauty Supply store, so that would be the first place I'd check

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mittenkitten In reply to taeliac [2007-09-09 07:03:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, considering that in previous costumes the characters have all had the same hairstyle as me, the 'fly aways' might be a bit hard considering I've never cosplayed with a wig before...

We don't have Sally's in Australia.....
-goes off to Price Attack instead-

Amazing darling! I've seen so many cosplayers and general wig wearers that can't put it on. I hadn't imagined it was hard, but this tutorial will definitely make it easier to those that do have trouble!

Thank you!! I'm glad it's helpful - I know, every time I go to a convention, most people look fine, and then there's always that one person that totally ruins it and I wind up thinking to myself "I need to make sure people know how to do this"...

This tutorial will also be in a new costume magazine - Costume Maker ~ I gave her all of the info to put the whole thing in there, so hopefully more people will know at least a bit more about putting on a wig

I believe it will be out in a few weeks - it's a new magazine, but I don't know anything about pricing at this time, or much at all [link]

pockypants [2007-07-11 04:27:16 +0000 UTC]

that's really helpful - thanks!
I could never figure out how to pin my wigs, so I'd just not and they kept slipping back so I'd have to pull the wig forward like every five seconds. XD

taeliac In reply to pockypants [2007-07-11 15:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was in the same boat before my workshop. Throughout the whole thing I was like "woah, okay...."

And we did these for a show at school, with huge hair-do's and stunts, and they (amazingly, in my mind) stayed on, and only one slipped once! [link] are just a couple of the wigs XP

That's helpful I have a (cheap and crappy) blue wig and until now I haven't managed to stuff my waist-long hair under it...maybe I have a chance now. I don't have a wigcap, maybe a swimming cap might work, too? I don't know...but the wig isn't very good, so I can't ecpect too much. Anyways, thanks for these tutorials! ^__^

reannaking In reply to ??? [2007-02-06 22:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, donning the wig-- the most annoying part of most cosplays I've done. Yes, putting 20-30 bobby pins in your hair to keep it unseen, and then finding that it still doesn't look right is FUN!

Kudos for this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to reannaking [2007-02-08 13:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Indeed - I've had nothing but trouble before without doing all of this. Gawd, I remember that Chii wig and shiver (and not just because I make the worst blonde ever)

Glad it helps ^___^

... never did all of that...

Great job on all the tutorials!! Now I must print them off for the future!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Riztally [2007-02-05 01:38:38 +0000 UTC]

You didn't do much bouncing around and whatnot, so it should have stayed on pretty easily. This is really important for uber heavy wigs, or awkward one's (like my Yuuko one will be), or if you're dancing on stage or whatnot.

I actually saw a YouTube video a few days ago where someone dressed as Cloud (I think) was swinging his sword on stage and acting up, and his wig fell off

Awesome! Man, I'll be wearing two wigs with two costumes this year, and my hair is getting soooo long it's getting harder to stuff into a wig cap.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to oO-Juri-Oo [2007-02-04 22:00:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know the feeling! Pincurling it takes time, but you can fit anything under the cap afterwards (french braid the back, it's even easier!) - we had one actress (the one who wore the wig in the demo, actually) who had hair down past her waist, and we were able to get it up every night for the show No mishaps or anything~

I always wondered how they made wigs look so good in movies! Thanks for the enlightenment.

taeliac In reply to BAMillustration [2007-02-08 23:35:37 +0000 UTC]

It's really amazing what you can do with a good wig, and how darn convincing they are, too - I wish I could do those types, but I highly doubt I'd have the patience!!

But wearing one right really helps a ton, especially if you aren't going for the "wiggy" look. Or something.

BAMillustration In reply to taeliac [2007-02-09 02:37:31 +0000 UTC]

I've always wanted to cosplay, but most of the characters I'd like to dress as have crazy hair, and I'd hate to have an aweful wig.
I made a Summoner Yuna outfit for halloween once though, and my hair was the perfect length and color for it. Hurray for characters with real hair!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to BAMillustration [2007-02-09 15:25:27 +0000 UTC]

I think Yuna is one of the very, very few characters that don't have insane hair to deal with which is great!

Oddly enough, my hair would have worked for her, too, a few months ago But yes! for characters that don't have bright yellow hair in unreasonable hairstyles!
