Description
EDIT 3: Ok so I lied about edit 2 being the last one, so sue me. I've had to make a few major changes including the weapon ends (as you can see new ones are still WIPS) and I need to tidy the whole piece up a little. The style I've used on the necklace is a new one, but it's growing on me, probably just need to practice a bit more.
EDIT 2: Last update before the finished piece with paint.
Just have weapon work and ornaments left to finish now, plus a couple of other bits and pieces, but it's pretty much there now.
EDIT: New photos for you and links below to more photos, going with a fist smashing rock which is why you have those bizarre chunks, at the moment they're just there to add thickness and shape to the next layer.

So as you may or may not have seen the large Lizardman I sculpted for Avatars of war turned out to be too large for the range.
Although it's annoying when things like these happen, it's primarily my fault for getting carried away and adopting the Pete Jackson mantra of "make it bigger".
Never one to get too knocked down and perhaps too special enough to admit defeat, I've already begun on a replacement, definitely smaller and with much longer arms.
I've been drawing on the work of Allan Carassco (hideously talented miniature sculptor) and so have come up with a design for a great weapon wielding monster of a lizard. You can't see it yet but I'm also drawing on real life lizards and so this one will be using a lot of inspiration taking from the thorny devil and so covered in a large amount of spikes and scales, though I'm determined to add some variety to make this one stand out from all previous lizard sculpts.
More to come soon.
Sculpted with kneadatite, wire and patience.

That's a pretty awesome looking design, and the snub face is a great touch, really making it look brutal and no-nonsense. The weapon is a nice design too.

sounds about right, is that to the top of the head?

Sure is, he's small than the GW kroxigors, but broader in the shoulder department.

That is a freaking nice piece. Keep it up man. My jealousy grows for you every day. Seeing this picture is making me want to sit back down at my desk again, it's been several months.

I say go for it, find something artwork wise or a good concept that gets you excited, sit down and sculpt it!

Interesting and dynamic pose. Like that.
Will it be full of spikes and scales? Or just placed at certain areas? Just curious, because i can imagine that it can be quite a challenge. Not only adding them, but doing nearly the same thing again and again and again etc.
btw it looks a bit weird, that the face is blurry

The-Build In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2012-08-16 20:16:53 +0000 UTC]
Just around the tail, back, shoulders and parts of the thighs, no need covering the whole thing and I'm not just saying that because of the effort required.
And yes blurry face is blurry just as crappy camera skills are crappy.

It is an intresting approach. "Hulk SMASH!" comes to mind not only because of the green stuff. The thornes and scales make him like more mean and less like a tortoise like the first one. Guess I'll get him if he is taken just to paint the monster. Very lovely sculpt.

I love the approach to the face: it's got all the reptilian hallmarks, whilst being quite different to any other similar lizardman range I can recall. It almost has a Deep Ones, Lovecraftian look to it.

Reading Lovecraft's novels is definitely on my to do list, I saw the recent Cthulhu movie, very scary yet haunting stuff.
I've not yet come across any of the references to the deep ones beyond a vague description but it fits well.

Still not sur how the lower jaw works anatomy wise, but I like the more compact approach to the skull.

Well it's different from any dinosaurus I've seen, but by contrast so is the thickness of the neck.

Harley-Owen [2012-08-02 21:04:09 +0000 UTC]
I loved the first sculpt, but I love this one even more. I think the snub nose leans a bit further away from the t-rex look; and the larger spikes on the back and head, all angled in a flow down the figure, really add to the piece. It looks more like a complete concept, rather than a t-rex head on a man's body.

The-Build In reply to Harley-Owen [2012-08-03 06:27:41 +0000 UTC]
That was part of the idea when I started, to look at something modern like the thorny devil but then completely change the make up and design of the anatomy into something completely different.
Thanks for the comment, I'm also happy it doesn't look like a generic dinosaur head too.

The-Build In reply to JarrettOnions [2012-08-03 20:24:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah the GW boys use green stuff (and super sculpey in large scale work which is then scaled down).
But look at guys like JAG, much tighter detail and much smoother, they use materials like fimo as do the guys at forgeworld.
