The Face in the Ground

In the 1950's my grandfather was camping in the woods in an area of upstate NY which was then considered pretty deep wilderness country. He and a friend went out scouting for wood for a campfire and they happened upon a neatly stacked pile of firewood. The wood was newly cut, and not perfect for a fire (being still green) but it was better than searching out better wood, so they brought some of it back to their camp site. They were a bit confused because they were so far out in the woods in didn't make any sense for the pile to be there in the middle of nowhere, especially with no sign of a recent fire pit nearby. In any case, they used the firewood from that pile every night that they camped.

The following year they went camping again, and again used wood from the pile, which hadn't been touched by anyone else in the time they were away. By the 5th year of my grandfather going to that same camping area, they gradually used up the woodpile. On the last day of camping that year they noticed that the wood had been stacked on an old tarp, which was rotten and tattered by this time. For some reason my grandfather's friend yanked at the then-empty tarp, which revealed a human face half buried in the ground beneath it. They ran like hell back to their campsite where the wives were waiting, and they jumped in their car and took off to the nearest town, leaving all their camping gear behind.

Naturally, they contacted the police. It turned out the face was just the head (no body was ever found) of a man who had robbed a local diner 5 years earlier. The robbery was conducted alone, but the police guessed that the guy probably had a partner and they had come up to the woods to hide. For whatever reason the partner had killed this guy and buried his head under the firewood. The truly creepy part is that my grandfather had remembered how fresh the firewood was when he found it. He figured he found that wood no more than two or three days after the guy was murdered.
