Description
Ta-da!I browsed a bit through dA and I couldn't find a tutorial on bird wings that really covered it ALL--from bones to wing shapes and feather groups. All the tuts I found seemed to assume that you were starting with some basic knowledge of how bird wings worked. I don't know if you are, so here's one that works from the ground up!
Yes, this is based off the tutorial style of the incomparable (Go read her tutorials on drawing humans; I promise you will learn something!) because I feel that it's a very clear and dynamic way to show people stuff. So yeah.
Other Stuff:
Interesting web sites, if you want to learn more:
[link] --Explore this site some--it has some really cool interactive stuff. Also that game! XD My bobolink always gets eaten halfway through.
[link] --some more in-depth stuff on the physics involved.
[link] --lots of info on wing shape and purpose!
Great reference books:
-Birds of Prey: Majestic Masters of the Skies by Paul D. Frost--glorious, two-page spreads full of raptor close-ups.
-Raptors of the World by James Ferguson-Lees and David A. Christie--what need I say?
-Reader's Digest Book of North American Birds -- beautifully illustrated, with cool tidbits of information about all the birds.
...and I don't want to hear that you don't have the money to buy books. Libraries need love too, and there is one near you--go get to know it!
All photos that are not from Wikipedia were taken by me. The canada goose picture was found here: [link] and the peregrine falcon here: [link] .
Phew. That was rather exhausting (and hopefully exhaustive!
Also: has a wonderful gallery full of images of birds in flight--go check it out, it's a great reference!
:EDIT: HOMFG A DD THANK YOU SO MUCH and !!!!!!

Noooo, there is no failure, only progress! (For serious, though, just keep practicing...I used to be crappy at wings but I just wanted to draw them so badly that I refused to stop trying)

I like how you showed where each feather was in a folded wing. A lot of people don't really do that. ^^

Someone sent me a link of this. and one of my works has wings. and my reaction to his feedback is 'wow i did not know that'.
This is something what self research may miss out on. and It will be useful for my future wings.
Congrats for the daily deviation eventhough its 3 years ago.

This is amazing!! Perfect for what I am working on, too: my teacher assigned a book-in-a-bag project. I, being my creative self, had the idea to have wings coming off of my bag (my book has to do with avian-human hybrids). I was stuck until I came across this lovely tutorial. Thank you!!!

Keep up the good work. This was so helpful. All the things I didn't know I didn't know all in one place. I feel like I might kind of look like I know what I'm doing if I give it a try now.
THANK YOU!

I wish I had found this before I had made an older piece involving a winged character...you are so far the only person I have found that included an undershot of the wing folded, the one view that I needed when doing said art. x.x Oh well, definitely will be referring to this for the future if I need to.

Oh you beautiful creature. I swear. : D
I really needed this in my life. A couple of my friends and I are developing a species, which you can pretty much imagine as a rabbit with a long tail that has a little bit of lion fluff at the end, little horns, and, of course, bird wings! We call them "Anima" or Life. :3 I also have other little winged characters flitting about, like a hippogriff and an angel. : D
But anyways, onto some more praise. XD This, was a very helpful tutorial, and unlike most, kept me interested and going the entire time. I was very much amused, and the humor is definitely going to help me retain all of that information.
All in all, that you very much for this lovely tutorial. :3

That was sooo great! I love the way you showed it, not just text and not just pictures with pointers on what to do right and mistakes to avoid. (Also it was quiet funny) This is by far the most useful tutorials on wings (and I've seen a lot), thank you so much for making it.
