Description Part 30 of my Web Comic, MLP Without Magic.

YAY, I'm in EQD. YAY, Yay yay.

www.equestriadaily.com/2014/11…

EDIT: Just to be clear, this isn't supposed to be about race, they've just insensitive. They upset Lyra because they didn't consider the type of magic that she does to have the same worth as more powerful\complicate magic. Like the magic that Princess Celestia does. They just thought that it was "everyday" stuff.

I've made this one a little shorter than usual, so that I can get it out quickly. I wonder how may of you can guess where this is going?

Lyra is not a magic slacker...   She went to celestia's school for gifted unicorns too...   She and her family are fairly well known in canterlot, enough so that she was selected as a bridesmaid.  Has spells that include Cloud walking,  hence her being at the flyers competition.  Now they are just being rude to all unicorns.

probably not,  but consider whats going to happen when Bon Bon finds out...    oh boy...   she can kick some serious flank and take a beating..  She survived lesson zero fighting with big mac,  even though lyra was TKO'ed   ok big mac had her by the tail in the end but the fact that she had lasted that long against big mac is a statement.

Probably because they work in Ponyville and commute from nearby Cloudsdale. How should I know? I just know they make a big deal about magic on there holidays. Falling of the Leaves, Winter Wrap Up. Just seems like the town is focused on doing things the earth Pony Way.

Again with the racism?

It's not what I was going for.

Think more along the lines of anti-mutant sentiment in an X-men comic.

Airship-King In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-11-30 22:26:05 +0000 UTC]

Umm... I may not be an expert on X-men... But wasn't the anti-mutant sentiment supposed to be all -about- racism?

Regardless, any way you slice it, these earth ponies are really making me want to punch them right now. Racist or not, their comments were totally out of line.

And even if they -aren't- being racist (And I'll buy that they aren't being intentionally so) they've already disproven their own argument. They said that nothing good ever comes of magic; then they said they were talking about things like how Celestia raises the sun. That would be, by definition, a -good- thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Airship-King [2014-12-01 18:02:01 +0000 UTC]

In the X-Men, a lot of it was fear an misunderstanding.

People were afraid of the mutants because they had powers\abilities that they didn't. Nobody likes the idea of a bunch of super powered people running around, capable of doing who knows what.

Airship-King In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-12-04 07:32:10 +0000 UTC]

Well if you say so.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to Airship-King [2014-12-04 11:46:56 +0000 UTC]

When they have the mutant hearings, and talk about mutant registration, this is usually the first thing that comes up. The idea of somebody who could defeat any security system by teleporting through a wall, or who could bring a bomb into a building by simply touching an object and making it explode.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Airship-King In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-12-04 17:30:46 +0000 UTC]

That's a good point I suppose. Which is kind of why the metaphor for racism doesn't really work. The mutants were legitimately dangerous.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

kitsychan In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-12-02 01:02:08 +0000 UTC]

well some of that fear was justified.   The idea that mutants were not always in control of their powers especially at a young age...  and some could have "violent" awakenings where their powers kick in and they kill someone, or lots of people, or wipe out an entire building, city block, or town.

In concept its like sending your child to school, knowing there is a high chance that other kids at that school may have loaded guns...   the fear of an accident becoming a driving force to identify and in some way block.

Now strangely,  the MRD in some series had collars that would stop our prevent the use of mutant powers...   Honestly,  those things had such a chance to do good or be of use... in some ways.   Consider for a moment, issuing them to schools, and the school has every student, human and mutant wear them.   There would be no prejudice, no instantly pointing out mutants with them,  and no chance for accidents...  parents, and mutants would actually be safe with that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to kitsychan [2014-12-02 11:49:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, some of that fear was justified, and not just because of people who couldn't control their powers.

If I'd had the right kind of mutant powers at 14, I might well have wiped out my school on purpose, and then gone on to join up with somebody how made Magneto look like a human sympathizer. I don't think that that aspect was covered much in the comics, but you did get some of it. Angry mutants using their powers to hit out at humans, or even other mutants.

But, the idea of everybody wearing a control collar just wouldn't wash in America. Either now, or when the X-Men was first released.

You'd have none mutant kids complaining that they were being forced to wear one because of a small group of mutants that might not even be in the school, and you'd have mutant kids complaining that they should be allowed to use their powers and that they shouldn't be punished because of a small group of violent\dangerous mutants, who might not even exist.

Imagine how a mutant with a none-dangerous power might feel? for example, somebody who had wings, but was being prevented from flying, or somebody who a tail?

I don't carry a gun, but I personally resent the idea to go through a metal detector everyday to get into school.

In the case of MLP, quite a lot of the "big things" that have come up in the sereis have been due to magic. Even indirectly. Just look at Boast Busters. A magical creature was unleashed on the town, because of Trixies boasts about her magic. Magic wasn't really the issue, but it still caused the problem.

kitsychan In reply to TheBadFaerie [2014-12-02 16:30:37 +0000 UTC]

I didn't say in the country just in schools,  consider it more like a school uniform.   Come on there are some schools that have metal detectors and armed guards in the USA right now.

The problem is segregation is never a good answer because it breeds either superiority or inferiority situations which fester into full blown race hatreds, domination and oppression.  And eventually segregation become culturally standard and that's it.

and yep, there are some mutants with absolutely useless powers, the most epic is, one knows the exact moment that the swallows will fly over Capistrano every year.  Thats it, thats the extent of her power,   after they migrate she knows the next time they will migrate over it...  can't predict years in advance only the next time...   Seriously,  even to other mutants she's...  lame...

then there are funny mutans, theres one out there who's immune to electricity and kinetic energy.   He's not that strong, he can still be picked up and thrown around,  he can't really fight... isn't a fast runner...   but he can stop the Juggernaut in his tracks... up until the Juggernaut picks him up and tosses him.   So what does he do?   he works for the power company,  doing work on power-lines...  if he gets electrocuted, falls off the tower alls fine, he just gets up brushes himself off and goes back up.  He just doesn't need safety gear, and his insurance costs are low.

but yeh, in MLP there are likely earth ponies that feel like lower class citizens because they don't have wings or magic.

TheBadFaerie In reply to kitsychan [2014-12-02 16:58:28 +0000 UTC]

Sticking with the mutant aspect, rather than the pony aspect, it might help to put yourself in the place of the different kinds of people who would be involved. There are the mutant, and the humans, and amongst them there would be different attitudes.

Using your school uniform analogy, having everybody wearing a collar would be like trying to stamp out gang crime and racism in one go, by making everybody wear masks "so you couldn't ' tell who was black".

This makes two suppositions, 1) that gang members are black\black people are gang members, and 2) that merely hiding somebody's race would stop racism (Presuming that the mask somehow hides "everything", just for this conversation).

How would you feel if you were a mutant, and you were asked to wear a collar? You may not have a dangerous power, you may have a dangerous power but pose no actual danger because you are in control and are a nice person, you might even have a power that helps like super intelligence, and wearing a collar could hold you back.

I'm the principal, I'm telling you that, without any evidence, I'm going to treat you as a potential threat. I'm making you wear something that hides\suppresses something that is an intrinsic part of who you are.

What if you're human? I'm making you wear something that's uncomfortable, unfashionable, uncool, or just plain stupid because of something that somebody else could possibly do?

It's difficult enough to get teenagers to pull their pants up.

I know that I'd have rebelled simply because I was being told to do something for reasons that were nothing to do with me.

You've never had to wear a short skirt in winter cuz its your school uniform...  Or an itchy wool jacket,  Ugg.   Schools already make students wear uncomfortable and unfashionable uniforms.   *giggles*

but again,  in cases of mutants,  you would still end up needing to segregate them in some aspects for training them in use and control of powers an again what about those with always on effects or emotionally controlled effects.  you want some kid who pulls a twightlight sparkle and bursts into flames when she gets anger...

This is why clestia took twilight under her wing,  reality is if she hadn't and kept having bursts of power like that she could have put others at great risk.

TheBadFaerie In reply to kitsychan [2014-12-02 18:27:25 +0000 UTC]

I've had a couple of different uniforms in my time, but that's still different from asking a human to wear a control collar.

Would you want to wear one of those ankle tags that they give to sex offenders, to hide the fact that one of your classmates was a rapist?

I think that a better answer would be mutant registration, and to have more experienced mutants on staff.

Kinda like the way that your school knows which students have a history of being bullies, and has trained security guards.

The mutant training could be treated like a class. Some kids to geography, others do mutant power training. Personally, I think that kids with pronounced powers would likely go to special schools, like kids who are good at maths get scholarships to schools for the gifted.
