I always knew that my uncle was a crazy man. He was old, senile, sweet but too honest. I shouldn't have been surprised when he bought a submarine on his birthday. "WHAT?! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!", I hollered at him from the dock, glaring at his face, poking out from the submarine floating on the water. He laughed. "Not any more than I already have, William!" I cringed. God, I hated that he called me by my full first name, it makes me sound like a wuss. "Hey, check this out won't cha' Will?", he ducked down under the hatch door. I leaned forward and waited for something to happen. I then clamped my ears as hard I could as the most horrendous high pitched sound shot through the bay. I let out a strangled groan. My uncle came back up, laughing like a maniac. What great company. "That's the ultrasound sonar on this bad boy!", he called out," It'll tell us whenever anything is within close circumference with us. But I'm sure you already knew that William, you smart, smart gal." I huffed. How in the world did I even get myself into this conversation? "Well.", I sighed, "I'm going back inside." I barely took few steps before I heard him screaming my name as if I was halfway across the valley. "What!?", I shouted. He looked at me, a slight pout on his face at the harsh response. Didn't matter, it was his fault for shrieking like a banshee. "Are you really not coming? You'll never have a chance to ride this beauty again.", he grinned, flashing those ever so unkempt teeth as he patted the top of the machine," how many people do you know that had a way of transportation down the deep blue?". I frowned but bit my lip at his argument. For once in my life, he actually sounded sane. He shrugged and lowered his bed back down. "I'll be here when you change your mind." Ugh! That smug voice. I glanced down, thoughts racing. The idea of going down into the deep dark nothingness terrified me, but yet filled me with interest and determination. I hesitated, but I managed to walk to the edge of the dock and near the submarine. I stared inside, catching glimpses of flashing buttons and hatches. I saw the top of my uncle's head, balding and moving about. And somehow, with newfound confidence, I descended the ladder and down the hatch.
