Description Worn to Kumoricon 2013.

I had to come up with a relatively last minute cosplay and decided I wanted to be the Tardis.  Not a Tardis dress, but the blue box itself.

The top is made from foam core and paper mache.  The lantern is wooden dowels and folded paper with shear white cloth.  The bottom is fabric that's hung like curtains from inside the top and held in shape with dowels at the tops and bottom hems.  My sister did the sewing and hem's for me.  Neither of us can figure out what went wrong with the fabric ending up way too long, we'd initially thought it would be a little too short.  That and the wind is why it looks all rumpled at the bottom.  Inside the box I have blue ribbons that are rigged up at all four corners so I can pull them to lift the bottom like it's a big hoop skirt and walk pretty easily.  Getting out of the costume or trying to do anything with my hands while wearing it is another matter.  I was originally going to make the front flap with a zipper so it could be opened, but time was running out.

Everything is hand painted.  It took a lot of taping and hand cut stencils and drying time.  All four sides are painted.  The windows are coated in glow in the dark paint, but I'm not sure how well they worked.  To get paint that would match the fabric I actually had to spend about an hour working with a very nice paint mixer lady at Lowe's.

It's hard to see, but up on the top left corner sits a little handmade K-9.  I'll have to take closeup pics of him later.  He ended up having a rough con, but he survived and lives on my dresser now.

A lot of people didn't realize I was a person at first.  I spent a fair amount of time standing in one place and people watching the con or walking slowly around the park.  Other people would come up and try to talk to me, but couldn't figure out where to look.  My face is inside the lantern, which is why it's so oversized.  That Lantern was the single most annoying part of the whole costume.

It went over pretty well.  I had tons of people take pics with me, including a bunch of Doctors and some folks that were just hanging around the park and not con related.  Sadly, this is one of only three or four pictures I have of myself.  So if anyone happens across some please do send me a link, I'd really like copies of more pics.  Especially any taken with other Doctor Who characters.

Brilliant!  So, so much better than any TARDIS dress.  Love it!
