This piece SCREAMS Kubert. As a lowly art student, It is not my place to critique this work. Kubert came from a strong classical traditional background, which I truly adore. What I can comment on were his strengths in this piece. The subject matter is masterfully depicted, the live soldiers depicted in warm washes, the fallen comrade's marker depicted in cool washes. I don't know if he picked that up from Adam Hughes, but they both masterfully juxtapose the warm and cool grays in such a manner. The touch of highlights on the cardboard truly make it pop. The canvas is one I've noticed that Kubert seemed to use more often as of late. The one thing that may detract from this is the use of corrugated cardboard, rather than a flat cardboard. If there were flat cardboard available, those pesky horizontal lines would not be there. However, what do I know? It could have been an element of style. I wouldn't put it past him. This is one of his best pieces.

Wow is almost all I can say about this Sgt. Rock. Mr. Joe has taken an ordinary piece of cardboard and turned it into a tribute to our heroes - past, present and future. Simple lines and shading are used to make this drawing true work of art. Magnificent use of basic shades to show the weary but strong face of Rock and his men after what no doubt was a hard day's battle. But what stands out is the rifle and helmet that we as Americans know all too well. All of the critique standards are there. Mr. Joe saw the vision to place the war tattered men in the background, still ready for battle. The originality of the piece is what makes it so realistic. The techniques used show a lifetime of hard work and discipline to the form and finally the impact hits you square in the heart! Mr. Joe, you have touched a part of my soul with this piece. I am a Disabled Veteran and I sent you the children's book "Mommy, What Is A POW/MIA?" in January and I know Veteran's issues from benefits to the true meaning of POW/MIA's and the sacrifices that are paid for this Great Country to remain free. Your Sgt. Rock work should a part of every Military Museum in the United States and maybe all over the world. As I said with Andy's Sgt. Rock, the only thing wrong with this piece is that it is not on my wall! God Bless you for your patriotism throughout the years!

love this piece of art. Strange material to use as it will deteriorate as the acid content is high.

I was so shocked when they finally did the final story in Dc's "Legacy" series.
does that still hold true with "The Mess 52"?

I ever love this cover from "Sargent Rock, The Prophecy #6"

His face is fixed like the Stone(or the Rock!)
There's sadness in his eyes!
No need words to tell his sorrow!!
I can hear Soldier's marching feet, they're moving in time

Quite simple at the same time very complex!

Simply a Masterpiece!
