Description

On December 29th, 1845 the United States annexed the neighboring Republic of Texas, ending the ten-year period of independence the country was enjoying. Soon enough, Texas had become another state of the Union, having the same rights and responsibilities as all the other American states. Still, there were people that were nostalgic of the times of the old Republic, and even wished for Texas to regain its independence and sovereignty. Although such groups and individuals usually weren’t really influential in Texan political life, they still existed and campaigned for their goals.
The Second World War ended with the defeat of the Axis powers. Soon, the world was split up between two large ideological factions: the Warsaw Pact, headed by the USSR and NATO, which was under the command of the United States. Although at first the new Cold War was mostly fought through diplomacy, espionage and proxy conflicts, it wasn’t so long before it escalated into a full-blown nuclear war. In October of 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a Soviet sub broke the American blockade on the island of Cuba. When the US Navy tried to contact the submarine, its commanders thought that a new war had started, and launched their nuclear weapons on the American ship.
The USSR nuked Washington DC on October 27th 1962, causing the fall of the federal government and the collapse of the United States of America. Soon enough, new nations started filling the void that was left behind after the end of the USA. In the State of Texas, things couldn’t be worse: among other targets, the USSR had managed to hit the Texan coast with several nuclear missiles, rendering it inhospitable, while also killing thousands of Texans and destabilizing the state as well as the regional administration. Texas soon fell into anarchy, as there was no central or state government anymore. People started moving from the now contaminated coast to the rest of the state that was left untouched.
Food shortages and the lack of a central authority caused mass anarchy, as armed paramilitary groups took control over entire cities, while ordinary citizens armed themselves and created defense blocks around neighborhoods in order to stop the various criminals and bandits that were looting and vandalizing whatever they could find. The lack of food or any other vital product led to the appearance of a black market, were anything from medicine and guns to oil and even humans could be bought and sold. Soon amongst this chaos, a new power arose, one that would finally bring a sense of order into the violent hellhole that was now Texas.
The Texan Freedom Movement was a small political organization that advocated for the independence of Texas from the USA. Before the war it was just an unknown group of a few thousand members. After the collapse of the US, the leadership of the TFM found an opportunity to realize their goals. The TMF managed to come in contact with some remains of the Texan National Guard that had gone rogue during the fallout, and were able to persuade them to support them on their cause. Together, they managed to take control of the city of Dallas, were they created a provisional government. It would take another 4 years for the Texan provisional government to establish their presence over almost the entirety of the state, fighting off rebel movements and crime lords that stained the Texan lands. On the same time, they made sure to spread propaganda, glorifying the days of the old Republic of Texas and promising to create a strong, independent country that their ancestors would be proud of. This propaganda had considerable success on influencing the people into supporting the provisional government. The administration had also created the Texas Glory Theater , a street theater that performed propaganda plays in towns and cities, in order to rally the people under the banner of Texan nationalism.
By 1966, all of Texas had come under the control of the provisional government. In July of the same year, elections for a constitutional convention took place, and after a few months, a new Texan constitution was formed. The provisional government was then dissolved, and national elections were called. Unsurprisingly, the TFM, now reformed into a political party, managed to secure a majority of seats in the Texan Congress and form a government. The new administration adopted an imperialistic stance, confident after the war they had fought against the League of Arizona a few years back. Soon, the Texan Army invaded neighboring Oklahoma, that was left in the grey zone after the fall of the US. The Oklahomans actually welcomed the Texans as liberators, and soon enough, the state had been incorporated into the Republic.
The Republic of Texas was a unitary presidential republic. The Head of the executive was the President of Texas. The legislature, the Texan Parliament, was a unicameral body elected every 4 years. Unlike the old US, Texas used a multi-party system, with several dozen parties represented in parliament. For the first decade of its existence, politics were spearheaded by the Texan Freedom Movement, now a formal political party with a conservative and nationalist ideology.Despite its large size, the young Republic wasn’t considered exactly a superpower. The fact that virtually all of the Texan coast had been contaminated, meant that the nation couldn’t use it for fishing or for importing and exporting of goods. The country was an informal member of the Alliance of Free Nations, although that was something controversial, since the Reformed States of America (the official government of the entire US according to the AFN) didn’t recognize the country as a legitimate independent state.
The Republic of Texas wasn’t really an impressive part of the post-USA collection of countries, having a lot of internal issues to resolve. Even so, it had the potential to grow into a regional superpower, and the Texans were surely working towards that direction. One thing’s for sure, that the Texans were immensely proud of their newfound independence, and they were going to protect it whatever the cost….
