Description This was a redline critique/tutorial of ~OtterGrl 's two characters, Deli and Ricky, as requested by the artist.

This tutorial covers very quick and basic things to consider in character design. You have to create unique silhouettes. I always tell people a character's face should be definable even without hair. Can you shave your characters bald, and still tell the difference between them? Same thing goes for the character silhouette. It strips them of their details, down to just their outline shape.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE SUBJECT, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ/BUY Eric Goldberg's Character Animation Crash Course This is NOT just a book on animation, but EVERY character designer, ESPECIALLY cartoonists, should OWN this book, and reference it well. It's written by the guy who drew Disney Aladdin's Genie. Even if you go "Well that's not my STYLE," the information covered in this book is a NECESSITY to all character designers! I highly encourage everyone to go out there and buy it like now.

Anyway I apologize, my art isn't to snuff in this but it's just, again, a quick and simple guide for some things to consider! Download to full view

XD Thanks, ja, especially in anime x.x People get into one way of drawing something, and they don't want to change it, like "I've discovered how to draw a nose!" but it's like... there's more than just A nose! there's HUNDREDS of types of noses! XD

Srs. That's one of the reasons I hate anime to death...All of the characters are so boring! it's the same face/body with different hair and clothes. LAME.

Thats the real reason I left anime in high school was becaue I realize that my characters reached this point of development, where they were as developed as they were going to get in that style... and yet EVERYONE kept confusing my characters. LoL I had 2 face shapes; the long bishi face, and the typical Ash-Ketchum style face. XD i was like... I felt like I wasted a long period in my life developing a style that had become "my style," and yet wasn't me.

My style was whatever series I was into at the time...or at least, I tried to adapt my style to that show. I started out drawing humans for the first time with Dragonball/Z (which is about the worst mistake anyone can make), then onto Naruto, then Shaman King, and by the time I hit Hellsing in 11th grade, my art resembled none of those shows. The only thing that made it "anime" was the fact that I kept thinking of it as that, and drew those open-lined eyes. One day I just closed off the lines and voila, it wasn't "anime" anymore. XD

Oh God I just realized that all of my favorite anime characters have designs that deviate from everything "appealing" in anime. Kuwabara, Ryu...fjdksfjdkfjd. ~*~INTERNET EPIPHANY~*~ E-Phipany, if you will.

ROFL XD DITTO on EVERYTHING! LoL XD Closing off the eyes yes. And totally Kuwabara and RYu! XDDD Cuz they were "ugly" and I love ugly XDDDDD I know you don't like one piece, but thats why that style appeals to me cuz they're so exaggerated and ugly and not the pretty-bishi-boy anime like everything else! XDD it's like. they're not afraid to make their characters look ugly at the expense of expression

It's true, One Piece totally has that going for it...I sort of liked the style in the beginning but the last time I looked at it (the newest pages that were out at the time), I went "fucking A what did Oda DO??!" Like, the quality of it went down the shitter and the style evolved into something nasty. It might be different now, I dunno.

You know, this is something I always wanted to get into doing, since I seem to have the so-called "Sonic Syndrome", where all my characters look pretty much the same aside from accessories and such. I always had a hard time where to start, and with this guide, it should be a little easier.

Thanks a lot for this, it was very informative and helpful!
