Description
PHEW This took all day but I finally figured I'd throw up a tutorial on creating your very own style. I'm not claiming that I'm a master of the world's most unique style or anything, but I figured I'd offer my take on how you CAN create a unique style.Credits:

This was a very interesting read. I liked the equation, lol. (Even when you apply the distributive property, it still holds true!) I agree with you, even though I may not have much original artwork to express it.

I see some artists who try various styles for their characters. Sometimes, they put down "Disney" as a style. If you look at the Disney Animated Canon, most of the films have a unique style.
Bambi- Naturalism
Sleeping Beauty- Medieval Tapestry
101 Dalmatians- 50s/60s contemporary (to complement the sketchy look)
It seems silly to lump them into one category.

Ooh, very nice ^..^ I'll have to try this sometime.
Although developing my own style won't help that much since I have absolutely no art skill at all. xD

Thanks so much, Phobs! Haha, yeah so many people think that the Disney style is somehow the ONLY way to draw Lions, but few realize what reference they're drawing from! Especially those "eye things" they draw around their lions. That's totally straight from African masks!

I've never thought of doing it with architecture like that, normally i just look into the shapes and patterns of other artists, and envelop as such. This is a great way to develop style, it teaches me a lot!

hex535 In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-06-08 20:51:33 +0000 UTC]
Yea, I mean, I understand, and view architecture as an extremely important style of art. I would never think in a million years that it is what influences artists to create unique styles.
It makes sense though, as when illustrating an interesting story, the characters need to be able to fit the scenery that is around them. You don't see a sharp, slim, and slender character in something loose like Alice in wonderland, and vice-versa. I would also think it would be helpful for characters away from were they hail from, to develop them with what their surrounding origins would look like, am I right? It seems like it would help them stick out more.

Additionally, I had no idea of the connection between African masks and the way the lions were drawn in The Lion King, but that makes so much sense. It's funny how that's become almost an almost canonized way of drawing feature film animals since then, even though the influence was so specific.

muy bien!
i like how you clarify the "orijinality" some people i know in RL, they always have in mind "thats anime" (well im not too impresed since they are not into drawing and suff) but i always tried to make my drawings, diferent, i got everything from lots of diferent stuff, even from you maybe XD but everything that you like in the places that you want them to be makes your own.
This tutorial is just perfect in my opinion.
You even got historic things! FTW!

Actually, this is very good! Great work, and rather enlightning!
I guess the way I draw is influenced from memory of all the Disney I watch, I never looked much when drawing, but when I watched some stuff again it made me think back creating the guys and how much of them are similar to some things. Can you say "The Great mouse Detective"?
Anyway, great, this actually helps alot Fyuvix, I understandthis alot better now.

ThirdPotato In reply to Gothfan1 [2010-06-08 20:05:50 +0000 UTC]
Haha totally! I'm glad it helps n.n Yeah as artists, we are always just drawing from memory. The best way to get out of that, is just to continue to collect MORE memory, and even to make the links/connections to different parts of our memory. For instance, we've probably ALL seen Roman collumns and architecture reflected in modern architecture, historical pictures, etc, though few of us recall that memory when creating character designs. The best concept artists are able to draw from a PLETHORA of influences. I hope this helps! Thanks for the comment!

Gothfan1 In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-06-08 20:09:53 +0000 UTC]
it helps a ton!
Hm, maybe that is why I can only seem to do Toon drawing. XD
Mostly because people don't stay still long enough for my memory to Load them.
My characters are dressed like people around me though, so that's a start!
Ya, i love roman culture -W-
