PHEW This was a bit of a doozie. I tried to cram everything I learned as a sequential arts major at SCAD into a tiny little tutorial. Hopefully, however, I've covered the tip of the iceburg, the basics of visual storytelling by use of ~PaMikoo 's comic, Her Monster pg11. If you like the art, please comment on the original. (she deserves it!)

No problemo! Well do be sure to check out a lot of great clubs on DA for feedback too! I love the new club system. It's getting people together to serve actual purposes! Check out my mainpage for a bunch of the groups I'm in. Most of them are tutorial/feedback based groups.

Oh wow! Just as I was thinking of trying to make a comic or at least write the script for one, here comes a wonderful tutorial to definitely give me a few basic pointers! You can't believe how helpful this is!

Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! I wasn't expecting you to go all out on your critique like this but damn if it isn't appreciated! 8D!
This is extremely helpful, especially the panel size/layout pacing. I would like to learn more about composition that has to do with backgrounds though. Do you have any recommended reading for that or if the ones you already listed talk about this? xD
All of this information is very insightful and I will be using this to guide me through the next page. Thank you man! 8D

I'm so glad it could help! As for further reading, I'm not sure about any of that in paritucular, though the main thing to think about compositionally is how the lines in the background help or hinder the reader's eye-flow throughout the comic page. For instance, you can use diagonals to direct the viewer into the next panel, or horizontals to lead the viewer to the right.
The only current example I can think of is the page I just did [link]
Panel 3, the rail guides your eye to the correct next panel. Because stacked panels can be visually confusing, I had to make sure people read the top one first, then the one below it.
THe last thing you want to remember with background composition is to beware of "tangents" or weird visual illusions where it looks like the drawings in the panel accidentally connect with lines of another panel. A good example is in that same page XDD Panel 3, the lower line of the railing kinda leads RIGHT into Ernie's hairline in panel 4. Try not to do that. XDDDD Also be careful for things mimicking the width of panel borders like poles, doorframes, etc. Just make sure that when you zoom really far out, nothing looks strangely connecting to something else xD If you find yourself with a tangent, either readjust the composition slightly .... or cover it with a speech bubble XDDDDDDDd

Oh man, I always get into so much trouble when I try to come up with a good composition
This will be like a life saver to me
Specially the panels shapes part. I never thought about things like a pacing rhythm and how the shapes would affect the way in that the action is followed through the page.
Very useful indeed
Good job!

ThirdPotato In reply to stavner [2011-02-28 19:33:32 +0000 UTC]
Sort of. Not a major for it, but they have a creative writing major I think. I can't vouche for how good their program is in that regard but it's a rather expensive school to go for if you just want to write. I wouldn't recommend it. As for comic writing, we have the fantastic Mark Kneece who does comic scripting one and two which are invaluable, amazing classes, but not it's own major I'm afraid.
