Description
WATCHUKA
Attributes: The Watchuka are a species of large, bipedal hominins that reside primarily within a hidden region of the Tibetan plateau, though their migratory ranges extend across much of the Earth’s terrain. They can range considerably in size, with smaller forms being around the same mass as an average human, while others can tower up to 12 feet tall fully erect. This variable size range is due to their unique polymorphic aging process. Watchuka can live for several centuries, and they may shift through several different builds, including slender forms with adaptations for climbing, bulkier ground-based forms, and lithe but muscular wanderers, the latter of which seems to be the base bauplan. An individual’s specific build seems to be determined largely by genetics, though diet and environmental conditions may also play a role.
Though they walk upright very similarly to humans, Watchuka are covered in long, shaggy, and specialized fur. This fur is actually a highly derived type of integument, not seen in any other mammal. On a microscopic level, the hairs are arranged as clusters along the dermis, and are woven together with fine barbules along their shafts, similar to avian feathers. Several layers of these interlocking fibers make Watchuka fur among the densest among mammals, forming an insulative and waterproof coat. More visually remarkable, however, is the ability of this fur to shift in tone. This is done via refraction and reflection of light by microscopic silicate lenses that coat the interiors of the hollow, transparent hairs, controlled by minute dermal musculature. This unique trait allows Watchuka to become pure white, pitch black, or cryptically patterned in shades of grey.
Watchuka have very finely developed senses. Smell and sight are both very acute, as they are able to see as well as birds of prey, or detect an approaching intruder from miles away if the wind is right. Their vision even seems to extend into the ultraviolet range, and bare skin may possess unique markings that serve as personal identifiers within this spectrum. They also have very good hearing, particularly within the infrasonic range, which is where most of their vocalizations are carried. Like humans, Watchuka are omnivores, though a greater percentage of their diet consists of tougher plant matter.
Some have tentatively suggested that Watchuka, like Mahars, may possess certain psychic/precognitive abilities, though not nearly to the extent of the later. They have been observed beginning to act before an event may happen, though this may simply be a matter of high observation skills. They also seem able to project hypnotic suggestions upon humans when necessary to conceal or protect themselves.
History: In recent years, since the dawn of a new age of kaiju, more and more credence has been given to the once much-disputed hypothesis of an advanced civilization that rose and fell long before that of the most ancient well-documented paleolithic ruins. This civilization, which attained a global dominance around one million years ago, flourished for nearly a thousand years. They built megalithic cities, maintained a form of light-based computation via strange artificial crystals, and may even have developed the power of flight by harnessing nuclear energy.
It is speculated that most of these great accomplishments came after their discovery and study of kaiju. They even seem to have attempted to control the beasts in their later days. This, though, would lead to their downfall, as the conflict between kaiju, constructs, and each other consumed and destroyed the once-mighty empire.
Those that survived were forced to return to the wilderness. Some of these groups would go on to become the ancestors of anatomically modern humans and other closely-related hominins. Others would develop in isolation, or in hiding. One such group found sanctuary within the great Himalayan plateau. These forefathers of the Watchuka turned away from the relics of their ancestors’ war-ridden past, and founded the basis of their society, which they have upheld to this very day.
Technology: Watchuka, with few exceptions, generally oppose advanced technology. By far, the most impressive and extensive of their construction projects lays deep within the Himalayas. The great “Hidden Valley” of the Watchuka is a broad depression nestled between the high mountains that has been almost completely covered over by a massive artificial ice wall. The wall is composed of ice strengthened by an interwoven matrix of Watchuka fur, and supported from below by a network of vast arches and columns of the same material. The overall structure is similar in appearance to macroscopic avian bone tissue, lending to its strength and volume. The surface is camouflaged as bare, tundra-like ground, completing the disguise. This superstructure serves as the central hub of the Watchuka’s sparse civilization, from which they have operated slowly but steadily for thousands of years.
A typical Watchuka dwelling is far humbler by comparison. They may be as simple as a local cave, a shallow den, a thick patch of shrub, or a temporary construction of branches and leaves, depending on their location. Personal tools such as eating and grooming utensils, charms, or simple instruments are fashioned out of wood, stone, bone, and hair, and are often carried woven within an individual’s fur. Tools for larger tasks are made and disposed of as needed.
Despite their spartan tool usage, the Watchuka maintain several relics of the bygone Paleolithic society they descend from. These include several so-called computing crystals, housed deep within the complex of their Hidden Valley. Though closely guarded, they rarely utilize the objects due to their general aversion of such powers except in matters of upmost importance or emergency.
Culture: The Watchuka are a predominantly peaceful species, whose society stresses the importance of discipline of mind and body. Though the average individual is more than capable of defending themselves, such aggression is utilized only as a last resort. One of the most fundamental aspects to their worldview is comparable to the human concept of Deism; deducing divine creation through reason and observation of nature.
Their faith includes animistic aspects as well, in that they believe all things possess an innate spirit, most particularly stones and earth. These elements are believed to harbor a collective “remembrance” of sorts, serving as a link to the past and as a guiding path to possible futures. For this reason, all Watchuka carry small collections of stones they use as charms or for assistance in prayer. Within the Hidden Valley, this practice is elevated to great extents, such as the construction of intricate stone gardens wherein various ceremonies or personal rights may be performed.
Apart from themselves, they also share their valley with a unique superspecies known as Ice Borers. These creatures, of as-yet-unknown origin, burrow deeply within the mountains seeking radiation pockets, around which grow a type of radiotropic fungi that make up the basis of the food chain. It remains unknown exactly what sort of relationship the two species share, though it may be Ice Borers excavate more extensive tunnels for the Watchuka to utilize.
At some point in life, all Watchuka undertake a great pilgrimage. They leave their valley of birth behind to wander the world, seeking guidance through meditation and observation along the way, to gain a full awareness of their place within the great “Cycle of Being” and prepare themselves for the next journey of the afterlife. Travelling in secret, they can cover vast distances by maintaining a steady pace over many years. As the average lifespan of a Watchuka can approach several centuries, this journey can extend many decades. It can even span multiple generations in some cases, ending with a Watchuka returning to the Hidden Valley of his or her grand or great-grand parents’ origin.
Human Relations: As far as most humans are concerned, the Watchuka are mere legends. Occational sightings during their pilgrimages have sparked a number of stories over thousands of years all across the world, most popularly those of the yeti and sasquatch.
The first incident involving major press coverage occurred in 1955, during which several student and researcher deaths were reported, along with the destruction of an isolated native village. Later, in 1957, a botanical expedition was met with similarly disastrous results, with only a single member surviving. It wouldn’t be until the 70s when a FATHOM team was able to track down this man, wherein he revealed his encounter with an unknown species under hypnosis. This team would be the first to successfully make contact with the Watchuka, during which it would be explained the earlier incidents had mostly been accidents, and that they were forced to kill a few humans only in defense after one of their own had been killed.
Under the promise that their existence would be kept secret from the general population, the Watchuka occasionally allow consultation by certain FATHOM agents in regards to matters of certain kaiju legends and whereabouts. For the most part, they wish to be left to their own devices, living in harmony as they have done for many years. Younger individuals have expressed more curiosity of human development, but the more experienced elders would prefer to wait and see if humans prove too unstable to last much longer before officially revealing themselves.

Also, out of curiosity, considering how many Bigfoot films there are (look it up, there's actually quite a few), which ones have any of you heard of/consider your favorite if you have one?

Interesting. There's a recurring theme that both the Mahars and Watchuka are descendants of prehistoric civilizations, that collapsed after trying to control the Kaiju...

These KR species keep being amazing. Love how even the most mundane-seeming species have some bizarre alien biology.
Fun to see apemen this creatively written in a Godzilla-fanfic. Speaking of cryptids, what role, if any, do the Loch Ness monster or any lake serpent have in your KR?
The animism part is interesting. Considering everything else supernatural featured in KR, I like the ambiguity of the truth behind this ’sentient stones’-concept.
Let’s see... the Hadean Kaiju, the Mahar, and now the Watchuka. How many more precursors lives/has lived in your world?

Oh wow that is really cool lol. I love the look that you gave them. And adding in the Ice Boars...pretty damn cleaver. Never would have pictured putting them together but it does make sense. The massive amount of text here though is a treat to read. You really have put on a thinking cap when crafting all of these together. Honestly in all my years in the fandom I think I have seen only one person ever use the Watchuka in some sort of creative project. And that was C.L. Werner's really...reaaally long Godzilla fan fic called "Koumajutsu: The Coming of Bagan". In that book the Watchuka were pretty much like they were in the Godzilla Hannah Barbera cartoon...except they were tasked with masking sure the entombed body of Bagan would forever stay frozen in a block of ice in their Hidden Valley. (Bagan's soul has been broken into 5 pieces or gems, and is ripped away from his body...thereby making him immobile).
It's a pretty fun book.
Anyway, you fleshed out this species though. Love the look of the older and younger individuals. You know the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas is finally making it's bluray release here in like a week or so right?

Thanks! And by "Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas" you mean the 1957 Hammer flick or something else?

The Peter Cushing film yes. Though I always found Forrest Tucker to be the backbone of that flick. Even if he is a bad guy. I just love the fact that the Yeti's are benevolent...well....up until the point that you don't give them back their dead brethren....then it is all out war. But giving them psychic like powers is such a cool move for the flick.
And for you "favorite question"...I'm embarrassed to say that The Snow Creature is one of my favs. It's probably cause it was on the same tape as Godzilla vs Megalon and I watched the movie to freaking death. Night of the Demon from 1980 is cool...though a little bloody. And Abominable from 2006 had a really great looking Bigfoot. Even if the movie is sort of like Bigfoot meet's Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window lol.

I've indeed seen the image. A very dynamic shot, to be sure. But it's also still pretty blurry and it's hard to tell exactly what angle it's from, so I don't know if it shows *exactly* how large KK is next to Big G. And of course it's completely without context, so still no telling what exactly's going on around there. But again, it does have me excited and hoping for a possible trailer soon...

I've only been able to see a few clips and read of Half Human so far, as apparently it's pretty rare (and not talked about very often), but I'm very intrigued by what I've be able to gather so far, and have it on the list the track down and see myself.

found it, it just didn't explicitly say "poly-fur", XD. i thought that poly-fur sketch referred to some ancient "jump rope" game that the Watchuka could have played.
