Description I do not claim to be an expert photographer, with only a little over a year under my wings I have more now than ever to learn about photography.

But with over 40000 pictures taken and almost half being of the aurora I do think it gives me a little edge when it comes to taking images of the phenomena, something I am more than happy to share.

Hope you like this.

I'll go in north-Norway soon. Even if only for 5 days

Awesome, you are going to enjoy the northern lights, and you are coming just at the right time, the cloud cover that has been hovering over northern norway will have moved almost completely away in 5 days.

I still intent on going doing it at some point, rather sooner than later.

Thanks for the tutorial. Those tips like recommended shutter speed are surely helpful! Being a long exposure fan I would've started with 30 sec or more

You are certainly welcome.
Yeah being mindfull of shutter speed is key for capturing the aurora, especially if you want a more realistic approach which most do.

I can image that a long shutter speed will make it one big blur and do it no good. I never realized before it was such a fast moving thing, as I generally see just pictures of it or timelapses (which don't tell you anything about real movement)

Most time-lapse sequences of the aurora will make it look faster, especially if its 3+ seconds shutter speed and 24 frames /s.
An extended sequence where you have 1-2 seconds shutter speed and 12 frames will provide a much more realistic look at how the aurora moves.

Thank you very much! Now, when I am chasing phantom, non-existent auroras all over southwestern Ontario, I'll know what to do!

I have read through your tutorials and you would be the first person to call If I ever come down to Australia to do some astrophotography which I have to say is very tempting.

Can't critique...no idea how re this work But funny enough i was thinking while on my bicycle trying to find ....(in comparison to your Aurora images) ...some mundane images, i should really ask that guy that does the Aurora stuff how to to go about it ...if on some remote chance I ever actually see one. Voila! brilliant idea
