Tommy Richardsen // Trichardsen // Facebook // 500px // Google+ // InstagramThat figure on the right side is my brother furiously searching the beach for his lenscap
Luckily we did find it and he also managed to get a couple of shot of this amazingly strong aurora flare which lasted no more than 10 minutes from start to finish.
Captured in Steinsvik, Nordreisa, Troms, Northern Norway.
08.02.2014 - Nikon D800, Zeiss 15mm f2.8, Iso 1600, 3 seconds.
4 Vertical shots stiched into a panorama.

As someone who has experienced the Aurora only a handful of times, and only twice did it last for 20 minutes, I'm immediately drawn to photos of the phenomenon. If I can't see the real thing, I'm more than grateful to see someone's photos, even more so when the person knows photography, as here. It's well composed so that your eye moves around to see it all, and the center point has an echo ( lucky your brother lost the lens cap!), as does the aurora with the reflection from ice patches on the ground. Because it's cropped to the horizontal view, it makes you feel like you are practically in the Aurora, so close to the ground does it appear

Thank you very much.
If I lived in a place where I could not see the aurora I would certainly share your feelings, of that I am certain.
But since I live where I do, I intend to make the most of it, both in capturing and seeing the phenomenon.

That is insane! I'd love to see these auroras one day... Do they last all year?

Thank you.
Yes the auroras comes and goes throughout the year, but you need it to be dark to see the aurora, so it can be auroras even though the sun is shining, but you will not be able to see it.

This is crazy!
Man you managed to capture solar rays of death raining down from space. Thank the ozone layer from protecting you and still having time to give you a fantastic light show.

Wish it was higher res, but I suppose these types of pictures usually come out quite blurry and have to be reduced to restore quality?

No this image is 14000 pixels wide and the resolution is 360 with very high quality, I have the images at lower size and res, so I can show them without worrying too much about them being used for other purposes.

ah, I see. Yeah some people like to make edits and stuff. I just like to see the finer details or wallpapers, but you gotta do what you gotta do to feel safe with your property.

I have had some issues before where my work has been used and presented as someone elses, or used in a commercial sense without permission, those have been larger images, so it is a precaution.

This shot I wanted to capture here, that my brother walked into the frame is another story, but I could not stop once I had started shooting the panorama.

what was it like watching them?... was it scary? how long did the whole thing last?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Trichardsen In reply to cheechy [2014-03-06 00:45:32 +0000 UTC]
Not scary at all, just simply breathtaking.
This one lasted about 10 minutes in total from the time in started to flare up until it had faded away, that is quite the short burst of aurora.
You can get auroras that flare up and goes super strong for hours, and other times just minutes, it is very unpredictable.
