The GIMP's Alien Map is a really weird thing. According to the docs, "This filter renders very modified colors by applying trigonometric functions." I have no idea what that means. I always use it with the default settings, which allows for a sufficient amount of inscrutable output. Interpreting this chart can be a bit challenging. These are the results of the Alien Map filter applied one (top left quadrant), two (TR), three (BL) and four (BR) times on my Another Color Chart ( www.deviantart.com/undefinedre… ). The result are a range of new colors, which includes quite 'off' ones, like poor people's teal and olive (go look in a cheap store that sells clothes to poor people: the entire collection is rather awkward, downput, muddy tones; never bright and confident and optimistic! Or at least where I live that is the case), which I like a lot. Ultimately, withe the Alien Map, everything seems to degenerate into a nondescript gray, but don't be fooled, because when you keep repeating the filter, at some point, all of a sudden, bright primary colors may pop up again. As its name suggests, it is a truly enigmatic piece of kit.
