Description I seem to have been getting close to the bottom of 'blobbing', i.e. creating a 3D illusion, where the forground seems to be pasted onto the background as if in a thick layer of paint. The image shows four identical instances of a yellow forefround against different shades of background.

The paraneters are:

- shadowing
- gradient
- contrast
- color cntrast

The shadowing here is quite obvious. There is a sharp gradient left by the Alien Map filter, which makes the edges of the blobs appear rounded off. Both prepare the mind for a 3D effect, but as the side panels show, aren't enough in themselves for any amount of proper drama. The true 'blob effect' is in the shade (Lightness/Brightness) of the background, in contrast with that of the blobs themselves. This effect is enhanced by the fact that the background contains a hint of blue, which makes the yellow blobs stand out even more (color contrast).

As with so many things in life, it is a matter of finding an optimum rather than a choice between good or bad. The second column looks more realistic, whereas in the third the blobs appear to be dancing off the canvas. The latter is well in the range of 'eyehurt'.

So that's about it as far as blobbing is concerned.
