Description
Dasin sat in a strange space of consciousness and the void that she had been stuck in for days. She had been thankful that the whispers and screaming had disappeared when Meelanik was pulled out of her body. When she truly sat in her body, she was filled with aches and pains. She knew she had been injured and she knew she was in a cave where something had been attempting to heal her. And yet, the beings could only do so much. She was aware that In had been around for a time and then he was gone. ‘It was better this way’ she thought to herself, ‘He won’t have to be around when I pass. Easier on his mind.’
She didn’t wish to pass, but the unbearable heat that radiated from her side kept going more and more painful with each day. It seemed to get to the point that the beings within the cave had given up. If she had a bit more energy, perhaps she would be able to break through it. But she was weak and growing more tired as time passed. The call of sleep hung tightly over her mind, and it grew more enticing with each passing moment.
A sudden noise caused her to twitch into consciousness along with In’s whine and a nose pushed into her cheek. Conflicting feelings ran through Dasin as she was so glad that In came back but also didn’t want him to see her die. The feeling of hands gently pushing her onto her side was new as she weakly gave a growl of protest. The being with hands gently tutted at her as he began applying some pressure around the pain. If she had more energy, she would have reached back and snapped, but instead she remained limp and whimpered. She felt some liquid soak over her coat as some of the pain eased slightly. Dasin wasn’t quite sure what was happening, but if the being could help her pain, she would happily lay prone.
Unaware of what was going on, she was kept away by In’s nose pushing against her and the gentle prodding of the being’s hands. Water had been poured over her side and it felt glorious against the heat. The being spoke in a language she did not understand as they quietly muttered to herself. “If you can carry her, I can help.” The being seemed to speak to someone, she could only assume her son.
With the help of her son and the being, she landed again on her son’s back. Leaving the warmth of the cave caused Dasin to shiver but the being did what they could to provide warmth through pets and rubs. They seemed to travel for a relatively short time before many voices surrounded them. The being let out a whistle and the voices scattered. When she was taken off of her son’s back, she felt two bodies nestle close around her, providing her enough warmth to stop shivering. She was comfortable as she allowed herself to fall into a light sleep. Her rest didn’t last long before she felt many hands on her and gentle voices. They spoke about her pains and exactly what would need to be done. Dasin merely rested her head on her sources of warmth, letting the beings do what they must.
For the first time in weeks, when Dasin opened her eyes, she realized she was far from the forest that she had been in. Bandages were wrapped snugly around her torso and there were two sphinxes curled around her to keep her warm along with her son. The darker toned female was awake and watching her closely, while her son and the other female were sleeping.
“You have a very brave son.” The sphinx spoke with a rougher voice than she had expected. Dasin looked at her son who laid near her bandage.
“And you are lucky to be alive.” The female continued, “If your son had not wandered here, I doubt you would have made it from what Ge was saying.”
“Ge?” Dasin’s voice was weak and hoarse from lack of water.
“Our handler. He ensured that your son and yourself would live.”
“Where are we?” Dasin slowly looked around.
“Ge’s ranch. Home to many and I’m sure he will offer you both a den if you wish it.”
Dasin’s attention landed back on the darker female, “A den?”
“Mm… Ge has a way of offering aid to those who need it, even if they do not know it. I have no doubt he will do the same to you.”
“Home…”
The darker female watched her closely as a smile grew across her maw, “Sounds nice, doesn’t it? You are both welcome. It seems you both need a safe haven from the world outside.”
It did sound nice and if there was anything that Dasin had learned there was far too much she did not understand of this new environment. Secretly, she had missed her pack and the security it provided. Perhaps she could call this place home. She slowly laid her head back down, letting herself fall into a restful slumber.
