Description It was a day a little bit like today
the way the clouds threw shadows over the hill
the day you realized that you weren’t going to find your future.

You were never going to go to Mars
or Pern
or Krynn
You were never going to open the door that led, inexorably, to Narnia
(or even Telmar, you weren’t picky, and you were confident of your ability
to lead the revolution.)

Inigo Montoya was not going to slap you on the back
and invite you to take up the mantle of the Dread Pirate Roberts.
There would be no sardonic Vulcans or Andorians;
you would never be handed an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

That was a strange day.

It ranked up there with the day that you realized that everybody else saw the you in the mirror, not the you inside your head. Not the you that was lean and tough and clever, not the you with perfect hair and a resonant voice that never said “Um….?”

Not that you.

No, they got the one that was fat and wobbly and stiff inside with terror, the one who was a little scared of eye makeup, the one who wore black because it was better to be freaky than pathetic.

You were never terribly fond of that you.

It was a day not at all like today
a day where the sun shone very brightly around the edges
that you realized that you could write that future.

You could blot out all those old arguments in your head by asking each character “What happens next?”
“And what do you say?”
“And are there ninjas?”

It wasn’t the old future, but it was close.
(Besides, by that point, you’d realized that Inigo probably bathed once a month and that when people stuck you with swords, you’d fall down and shriek, and also that your feet hurt. And writers get indoor plumbing
and birth control pills if they can get them.)

It was a rather odd day
though not entirely unexpected
when you met the people who were angry with you.

It took awhile to figure out. Much more than a day, in fact.
Eventually, it came to you that those people had a future, too,
but they hadn’t quite realized they weren’t going to find it
and they blamed you for the fact it wasn’t here.

You were not the sort of person that lived in their future.
You were still too fat and too wobbly and much too weird, and you laughed too loudly
like a good-natured hyena
and you were not supportive of their high and lonely destiny.

And if you were here and their future wasn’t
it was probably your fault
and if you went away
maybe they’d get to go to Mars after all
pal around with Tars Tarkas
have phone-sex with the Pierson’s Puppeteers.

They got very mad about it.
You pictured them hopping,
arms and legs going up and down
like angry puppets
when somebody pulled the string coming out of their crotch.

It was all very strange.

It was a day sort of like last Tuesday
or maybe the Friday before last
when somebody came up
with a copy of your book
it was dog-eared and they looked like they might cry
and they said “Thank you.”

It was a day.

I'll be lucky if someone, someday comes to me with their broken Kindle Fire and whines that my story screwed up their software somehow and that I now owe them money.

As it is, I become elated whenever I get a thoughtful review on one of my fan fictions, then I have a day where I realize it's just fan fiction and is quickly forgotten, because it will never shine as brightly as the canon it is derived from.  Fan work is merely geeky conversation.

This seems like it should be read at a convention.  The last anime convention I went to featured a musician singing "The Shipper Song."  This could go with that, in a higher up the food chain way. If that makes sense.

I know what you mean

At times I am ashamed of writing fanfics, because they will never be my story

but when getting a review, seeing that people are reading it. That makes me the happiest person alive

If you know what TV Tropes is... I've been recognized on their Fanfiction Recommendations pages (for a couple of fandoms).  I think that's very special. And fanfiction is fun, so I expect to be doing it even if I ever succeed in becoming a professional.  Still, I'm hoping I can have someone come up to me with a dogeared copy of one of my own worlds someday, or at least a broken Kindle. Heh.

As far as fanfic goes, I value the chatty, in depth reviews over some of the bizarre one-sentence/few word ones I get.  Lots of people leave the latter.

Sorry, i never heard of Tropes, but still, to be recognized is quite awesome, congratz

i like to write fanfictions, they are fun to write!

that would be so special, you and me both.

i agree completly, makes you feel a little special when people takes time to go into depth with it instead just a "nice"

of course, the "nice" is fine, it's just... yeah you probably get what i mean

I don't think fanfiction is quickly forgotten at all. Most of it, maybe, but I have definitely read fanfiction that was better than the canon it came from, and one or two fanfictions that really touched me and made me think. People rag on fanfiction, but... as they say, 90% of everything is terrible. It's just that fanfiction or fanart is a lot more visible and accessible than original writing.

When I think about it, I do have some stories from over a decade ago that I *wish* people would forget.  (I actually keep most of my old stuff online on purpose because I've had nostalgic people email me about my old junk).

No - fan work is shameless practice and a thoroughly good intellectual workout for a creative writer.  I believe in yourself!

I have improved my general style a lot through the frivolous stuff... Lots of people read fanfiction and are willing to help you with common grammar errors.  Easier to get people to do that with fan work than web original, it would seem. It's also pretty good for characterization practice.  Working with established characters and putting them in your own crazy plots and figuring out how to keep them in-character I find has some parallels to keeping one's own characters, once established, consistent through a long plot.

Still, fanfiction isn't something I expect to be signing any autographs for in the future.

Ha! Not at all meant to imply that no one says thank you. You guys do all the time. Keeps me young. Or something. *grin*

The reminder is always appropriate.  We humans tend remarkably toward selfishness.

Actually, I sort of knew what to expect since I have read your descriptions accompanying your quirky pictures for years now. Your style reminds me slightly of Douglas Adams for some reason...

Hmmm , I was surprised that I really liked your poem " after all I expect pictures/illustrations from uraslav " . As for the interesting stuff in the novels ,TV and movies well sometimes it's just a matter of NOT walking by the path less traveled . I've learned to ride a horse , use a sword well , shoot a gun , bow and arrow , simply because it was interesting " and far more ". Yet I have saved several lives and used none of those things . The thing that was key was NOT walking by those who needed help or were in danger . What came in handy was knowing first aid , how to deal with fires , what to do around hazardous materials " knowing these things is important to not becoming an additional victim ". Just someone who helps when he can .

"anybody coming to me for poetry deserves whatever they get" is such a Banksy-like saying. I like your poetry. I can't get my hands on your books

Weeell mostly I've looked at the library because I'm super poor, to be perfectly honest.

that's a problem I've heard of before. These books are not in enough libraries. We need to set up some kind of internet library where people could just exchange books as they need them. Too bad books are so expensive to ship. Maybe ebooks are good for something after all.
