December's monthly quest for Kukuri ARPG.
My newest kukubutt Khaliq makes her debut appearance! Better watch out for the muscle freak's sharp teeth Joy!

Winter had arrived to almost every corner of the continent, covering the ground with snow and freezing every last drop of water it could reach. But that was not the case everywhere. Eternal summer and scorching temperatures ruled over certain areas, where only the toughest plants and animals could live. Survival for the fittest, fastest and the strongest ruled over those terrains. Only small animals roamed those hot deserts, taking cover from the heat in the shade of some cacti or brush they happened to stumble upon. Only small animals and Khaliq.

However this winter was different. The desert was a lot colder than usual and the snowfall had even reached the giant sandbox's edges. This didn't suit well with the sphynx, Khaliq, who had been used to the overwhelming heat that had always lingered even on the very outskirts of the desert.

The fine desert sand rose to the air, forming dustclouds as the muscular kukuri stomped the ground impatiently. Snorting and throwing her head around she stared at the human infront of her who was holding two large pieces of meat. The shorthaired woman clicked her tongue at the large animal's behaviour, lifting the meat pieces further away from the restless animal with a smug grin on her face.

"I already told you that you're not getting anything before you behave" Azra said, shaking her head a bit as the sphynx continued to stomp the ground with its powerful backleg.
"Fine, I guess I'll eat these myself then" the woman grinned and turned around with dramatical, over exaggerated gestures. She could hear how the kukuri behind her growled a bit with disagreement before stopping the constant fidgeting. Azra looked over her shoulder at the kukuri dove which had finally calmed down and decided to just stare at her handler menacingly under her brows.
"That wasn't so hard now was it Khaliq?" Azra grinned as she turned around. "There you go" she continued and tossed the chunks of meat to the sphynx which caught one of them with a pleased grunt. The large, short tempered animal could easily bite Azra's head off, but for some reason the two had managed to form a tight bond which neither of them wanted to break. That was probably the only reason why the tomboyish woman could tease her travelling companion like this.

Azra headed back towards the camp the two had made nearby some old ruins while Khaliq stayed behind, taking her lunch between her teeth before moving a bit further away from the old pillars. Setting the pieces of meat on the ground at a spot Khaliq deemed suitable for eating, she raised her head to locate where her handler had gone. After a while of scanning the ruins she spotted the woman sitting on a toppled pillar, fiddling around with her prosthetic arm. Just as Khaliq was about to turn back to her meal, she could hear the quick footsteps of something small and fast right beside her and see how the pieces of meat were snatched away right infront of her. Dumbfounded the muscular dove stared at the small, pink critter which had decided to steal her meal. Another kukuri. Peculiarly small, but still a kukuri. The food thief stopped a few yards away, staring at the sphynx with a grin. It seemed to be daring the larger kukuri to chase it down, waving one of the pieces of meat between its teeth. Khaliq snarled and lowered her head, charging right after the miniature.

Joy, the pink kukuri, had wandered into the desert when the temperatures had dropped and it had seen how hard it was for animals to find food around there. She had stumbled upon Khaliq and her handler while adventuring around the marvellous ruins she had found. Seeing how Khaliq took the two large chunks of meat to herself made Joy frown as she creeped closer to the sphynx. How awfully selfish it was of the bigger dove to take both of the pieces to herself and not offer the other one to her handler! The poor girl was all skin and bones as far as Joy was concerned! Thus the sly miniature had managed to sneak close enough to the sphynx and snatch the pieces of meat. It was time to teach the selfish muscle freak how to share! Joy had a pleased grin on her face as she ran in circles, skillfully avoiding her chaser. Cheerful chirps sounded from the miniature's throat as she jumped around Khaliq whose attempts to catch the slippery kukuri were futile. Joy's plan was working perfectly! Unfortunately Khaliq didn't really see the little game of tag as a game. The larger dove had grown up on the desert where food wasn't a plentiful resource and every last bit of it was precious. She didn't share.

Azra had been absorbed in getting the sand out from the gears of her mechanical arm when she finally realized the commotion nearby. Her sharp eyes moved from her arm to the sphynx that was running and jumping around nearby, grunting and growling as it always seemed to miss its target. Was she chasing a rabbit? Azra squinted in the sunshine and as she spotted the thing Khaliq was after, she snorted loudly whilst trying to stifle her laugh. Khaliq, her Khaliq, who was one of the most skilled hunters Azra had ever come upon, was chasing a small, pink kukuri. The best thing was that she couldn't even catch the small thing!
"Play nice Khaliq, that's not for eating!" she yelled at the sphynx whilst grinning widely and returning back to fiddling with her arm.

The chase lasted for a good while and Joy always managed to slip right through Khaliq's teeth as the sphynx was about to catch the small thief. Eventually the fatique started to weigh upon the muscular dove and in the end as the distance between the two kukuris grew wider and wider, the sphynx had to give up. Snarling and grunting it slowed down to a halt and just slumped on to the sand. Its sharp eyes were still focused on the miniature which had stopped running at this point as well. Khaliq bared her teeth as Joy turned around and started to head back towards the sphynx. The larger kukuri's head rested on the sand as it breathed heavily from the intense chase, and it couldn't do anything else than just let out a deep growl as Joy stopped infront of it. The miniature dove tilted its head and after a while of staring at the defeated sphynx, it dropped the pieces of meat infront of it. With this Khaliq stopped the growling and snarling and just stared at Joy under her brows as she sat down right infront of the sphynx's head. Without hesitation Joy reached out to pat the bigger dove's nose, which got the sphynx to snarl slightly. Joy's tail was thumping against the ground as she continued to pat Khaliq's nose and the sphynx didn't even bother to move her head. She just snorted and stubbornly shifted her eyes away from the miniature, as if not wanting to admit her defeat.

Joy grinned. She was now certain that the bigger kukuri had learned her lesson.
