Description
The Whirbird, clockwork hummingbird with gears, brass and nickel keyfeathers, a glass heart, and a touch of the Elsewhere.Original is really large, I think 18x24 inches, and is all colored pencil. The background was smashed in using Prismacolor Art Stix, which are pastel shaped chunks of woodless colored pencil lead.

Aw man rockin' taco a DD!!! Thank you, thank you! This is one of, or maybe my most! favorite pieces I've ever created, so it makes me happy that it gets the exposure.

Neat concept! Especially since hummingbirds are built so uniquely, even for birds. I love the eye especially in this painting, and the texture of the feathers is amazing.

Thank you. When I was very young, I started using colored pencils because I had these wonderful books that opened my eyes to the versatility of colored pencils. I could not believe what people could do with them, and I wanted to do the same. I love the medium.

Wow! This is very detailed, and I love it. Beautiful colors, and the background is very nice, it provides a good contrast between the main focus and behind.

Used to have a few flower bushes they loved.. then at me Gran's, a feeder in the window. Always fun to catch that little glimpse of them.

What an amazing concept! I espescially love the little clock on his chest.
The clockwork bits really make it look like a "Whirbird", sort of otherworldly and weird, rather than just a hummingbird.

that's incredibly beautiful .. the background has that really old, timeless feel to it, and the hummingbird is very very well rendered. And I think the concept is amazing .. just all the little details. The little movement lines above the wing are a neat addition
I'm wondering if this was inspired by watching hummingbirds .. since they seem almost like clockwork, the way they move?
Also ... maybe it's just me, or because of the watermark, but the very topmost blue-white tail feather seems like the top edge of it is a tiny bit too low, like it lines up too well with the rest of its body
if that makes any sense
anyway .... AMAZING

Birds of paradise are my fave birds along with hummers and corvids. I have many drawing of them, just none as detailed as this. Someday though!

He is quite interesting! My favorites are the Raggiana BOP and the King Bop, tied with the rare hybrid of the Raggiana x Blue Bops, the Captain Blood bop.
Many bops don't have any illustrations online, I've only found them in one scientific book. So cool!
