Because without the list of royal tasks to compleate day and night, the sisters can do have the rest of the time to themselves and Luna adjusting to everyday pony life will be better for her without the pressure of being a royal influence. Besides, theyβll still probably raise the day and night till Twilight has a handle on things, or even find a way to set it up as automatic, not to mention Luna still would enter ponies dreams at night, maybe even start a dreamscape core that secretly battles nightmares. Iβd nominate psychologists and gamers for that.

Even better yet: NONE of them retire. They just take a vacation and then return and Twilight takes on more responsiblities but doesn't REPLACE the 2 sisters.

i've been partial to the idea of a three year rotation:
Twi+Luna, Twi+Celestia, Luna+Celestia.Β
two years actively ruling, one year vacation (though still on-call for emergencies).
i never liked the idea of them shoving everything onto someone who's greatest qualification was "school headmaster", and ZERO experience with pretty much anything and everything the sisters dealt with on a daily basis. make twilight an assistant for a few years, let her get used to things before yanking the rug out.
the whole "princess" thing was forced on her to begin with! did anyone ever ASK if she wanted to take on that sort of responsibility? (though the answer would likely be yes anyway because she has issues saying "no" to celestia, to the point she would have trouble refusing if celestia asked her to cut all four hooves off)

Amen. At least the "has to rule equestria" part. She was very happy and fine with being the princess of friendship, that's the title she chose for herself and dedicated herself to. And it was perfect for her.
But no, let's force her onto the throne alone and separate her from her friends. What a nice endgame for her years of excellence in the service of Equestria, heaven forbid if she had any choice on what she wants to do with her life, lmao.

well they never told us exactly how lunas banishment works, i mean they never said she was sealed on the moon, she was banish, this could mean she was still awake on the moon, she just can't leave the moon, so the part of she being sleep is more of your headcanon xD.....

well she doesnt rule the kingdom either, she worked from sunset to dawn, there is no-one to rule!, that is literally why she became nigthmare moon in the first place!, beacuse no-one was awake while she was..... lulu rules over dreams and the nigth, she thecnicaly never rule the kingdom to begin with!..... and in celestia on words, figthing nigthmares and being a psycologist for ponies is hard, i mean what unholy things luna has seen xD (about herselves, or her sister or the main 6, even about spike!)

but it never was stablish that celestia did luna works all those years, i mean she was sleeping in the night xD , and celestia have been taking care of the whole kingdome even before luna became nightmare moon, againg that was one of the point why she became nightmare moon to begin with....
both sister were working along, neither of both helped each other to do their duty, there is even a episode that adress this point xD.....
i get what you are saying but she was possesed by a dark entity for 1000 years that will give you a lot of stress or at the very least pstd xD, and thecnicaly luna dutiesΒ are harder since she takes care of each individual subject, she has to look for everyone dreams, while celistia cares more for the kingdome in a general matter and no individual subjects......
and yes indeed luna has worker less hours than celestia, but she got possesed and banished for a lot of time, and beside, celestia also didn't do all her works, if she did, twiligth wouldn't be the new ruler of equestria xD

This is something few people if anyone ever spoke about. I still remember my reaction during the first episode of season 9 when luna said "I for one am looking forward to a little R&R". A little R&R!?! You been on the moon for a 1000 years and been back for like what a few years, why do YOU need R&R?!?!? And the way she said it made it sound like she was going on a vacation or something not retiring. The whole retirement thing was just silly.

"A Royal Problem" showed Luna neither enjoyed or was good at the responsibilities required of a royal. Besides her dream help which makes her a therapist not a ruler.
My problem is who's going to take care of the dream things now? If Twilight Luna was pushed to her limit with just her workload so with Celestia's as well...

I always thought it was funny that Luna was in charge of dreams anyhow. I can't imagine she'd been doing it from the Moon when she was Nightmare moon, unless everyone had nothing but nightmares for 1000 years haha.Β

yeah, that is a good point, I mean, let me count NMM (2) Nightmare Night(1 or 2) Helping ponies with dreams (1 or 2) Flashback (1) Tantabus (1) Celestia's theatrical debut (1) Princess Cutie Mark swap (1) Final episodes (2 or 3) So in total, we are looking at 13-15 (call up to 20 for wiggle room and if I missed any) episodes out of over a hundred. I know the entire point was Twilight's story wrapping up, but still, I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Luna throughout the series.Β Β

of those 15-20 episodes that she had a major role in, there were probably 3 to 5 that could be construed to be about her royal duties. Suffice it to say that the royal sisters were rather underused, particularly as the seasons progressed. For example in the early seasons Celestia was a wise teacher/mentor/mother figure, in later seasons she and Luna became more comic relief than anything else. But still, considering I am rather a Johnny come lately to the fandom (~3ish years) I am happy enough with how things turned out.Β Β
