Description
In the city of Los Angeles, 2149, acid rain continually falls on glass and steel skyscrapers. The streets are populated by crowds of humans and androids, indistinguishable from each other except for bounty hunters like me, Jacques Renaud. I am a "Voight-Kampff", a specialist responsible for detecting the replicants hiding among us.Tonight, I'm tracking down a replicant, Γlodie, a Nexus-7, so well designed that she thinks she's human. She works in an absinthe bar, where holograms of opera singers entertain an eclectic clientele. I sit at the bar, order a drink, and watch him. His movements are graceful, almost too perfect.
I approach him, pretending to be a regular customer. She smiles at me, but I see a glimmer of suspicion in her eyes. I ask him subtle questions, those that reveal the nature of a soul. She responds intelligently, but her responses are calculated, revealing her identity.
Before I can act, she surprises me, knocking over the bar with superhuman strength. The chase begins, through dark alleys and neon markets. She's fast, but I know these streets better than her.
Finally, I catch him on the roof of an old building. She turns around, her eyes shining with artificial tears. βWhy canβt I live?β she asks. This is the question all replicants ask, and the one I never have the answer to.
I raise my blaster, but hesitate. She is so human. May be too much. In a moment of doubt, I lower my weapon. She takes the opportunity to escape, disappearing into the rainy night.
I stand there, in the rain, wondering if I let a machine go, or if I spared a life that deserved to live. In the world of light and shadow in Los Angeles, the line between man and machine becomes increasingly blurred.
