Chapter 12
Scarlet
The nightmares and dreams throughout the night flashed through many different things from my memories. I was in the village with my friend. Then, I was in that place with him and me turning my mind toward its darkest part. The next was the village up in flames and the fight between me and my friend where I returned to myself. After that we were in the nether and I was trapped in my room. Finally, the promise before I died. Then, I woke up, my forehead had sweat on it. Kai ran over to me, worried.
“Are you okay? I saw you were tossing and I was about to wake you," he asked, his eyes full of worry. I nodded.
“Yeah. It was just a dream,” I said and he took a breath of relief. I looked out through the trapdoor to see sunlight beginning to light up the sky. Bones cracked and there were cries of zombies as they burned. While that was going on we began clearing the cave of our things. We’d be leaving soon, probably today. Not long after the sounds stopped we were ready to clear out. We filled the hole with dirt and the ground where we had come out with grass and dirt. I looked up the hill, mountain, knowing it'd be a tough climb. We'd have many to go through until we could reach those at the top. I looked at Kai, bow in hand and arrows at my side. Both of us had our jackets wrapped around our waists. Kai's look was determined as he held his diamond sword tightly in his hand at his side. We nodded to each other before we began moving toward the mountain. I took a breath as I walked beside him. We took the first step onto the mountain and all of a sudden some of the guards came out of the bushes, swords and bows in hand. There were five of them and I guessed that there were more up ahead. Then, without warning they came at us. I jumped out of the way of an arrow, putting my own in place on the bow. Just as I was about to fire an arrow struck me in the leg and implanted itself there. I hissed in pain as that leg bent, making my aim off and the arrow fly off in a random direction.
“Scarlet get back. Go into some cover,” said Kai as he ran to block one of them. I nodded and got up only to be cut on the arm, leaving a huge gash, by an arrow that skimmed it. With my teeth clenched I aimed and fired in the direction of where it had come before backing into a tree. As I turned to climb up the tree and grabbed the first branch I heard the arrow strike its victim. I pulled myself up onto the branch arrows whizzing past me into the branches. Pain pounded through my leg as I pulled it over the branch. I quickly decided that I wouldn’t go any higher than the second branch knowing that it’d just cause more pain. Milliseconds later an arrow flew an inch away from my face and my heart started racing with adrenaline. I looked down to see an archer down below. She had blond hair in a ponytail and piercing green eyes. Her look was a half smile or more of a smirk.
“Well, it looks like you’re not even going to make it to the top, not if you’re already struggling here at the bottom,” she remarked. “Your boyfriend is over there fighting all alone and you’re hiding in a tree not doing a thing but shooting a few puny shots. That first shot on one of our men was lucky. You got one person out of the fight. What are you going to do now?” I blushed half in anger and half in the fact that she called Kai and I a couple. My gaze fell on Kai who was in a fight with one of the swordsmen, the last one left. His gaze was firm and I knew he was determined to make it. I clenched my teeth and nodded, reaching into my bag and slowly putting an arrow on the string.
“You know what? I’m not a weakling or afraid. He asked me to get back. But now I have a reason to come forward and join the fight,” I said, my gaze burning through her skull. “It’s time you burn.” In that second the tip of the arrow came to life in an orange blaze. I pulled back and she looked at me in horror. But soon that horror turned into a look of pride and determination.
“I knew you could do it. It’s up to you if you kill me or not. In the end I’ll be free from the shadow just like everyone else,” she told me, a smile on her face. “But now you have to decide if you’re a murderer or not.” I bit my lip, glancing at Kai and then at her. Then, I lowered my bow, the flame extinguishing itself to nothing. I slid off the branch and landed on a the ground with a flare of pain going through my leg.
“Not all of us are bad, just under his power like you were and Blake is…” she said, trailing off at the end. I felt a feeling of dread and sadness along with some anger at the thought of Blake. “Well, I need to go. Goodluck Scarlet Rose. You’re so close to escape, yet so far.” Then, she ran off into the woods before I could say a word. I didn’t even have a second to ponder what she said before Kai came running over.
“Are you okay?” he asked. I looked him over and nodded.
“I should be asking you that. You’re a bloody mess,” I told him, a bit of a smile coming to my face. It was true. He had many gashes and a few arrows just caught in him. He looked at himself and slightly smiled. But then his face turned serious.
“What did that girl tell you before walking away? You seemed a bit worried,” he asked, his eyes narrowed.
“She sa-” I started, but then I thought better of it. There was a feeling that I shouldn’t say anything. I knew something was going to happen soon that Kai wasn’t going to like and he wouldn’t be able to fix.
“Don’t worry about it. It was nothing important,” I told him, reaching down at the arrow stuck in my leg. I grunted as I pulled it out. Blood began seeping onto my pants. I reached into my bag and grabbed my black and blue scarf, wrapping it around the wound to stop the bleeding. Kai watched me with concern, but didn’t question me any further on the former topic. My eyes were downcast to the ground. After Kai cleaned his wounds we continued on. As we trudged on up the mountain hill thing I let my thoughts drift. We fought a few other as we made our way closer to the peak. Just as I thought we’d be able to get a short break I was knocked to the ground, a sword held to my throat and a hand to my mouth. Someone was on top of me. Kai was being held back by another. I looked up to see a girl with long black hair and dark blue eyes looking at me. The metal against my throat glinted in the sunlight as she smiled down at me.
“Scarlet, girl with the power over the flames. I’ve been waiting to meet you. Name’s Lace,” she said. Each word was like an icy blast, sending chills down my spine. Just then I felt something cold going over my feet and I looked down, eyes wide. Ice was beginning to make it’s way up my legs. An muffled cry of alarm escaped my lips. She got off me and I couldn’t get up. My feet and my legs couldn’t move. A flame sprouted from my hand.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. If you melt ice you know what it becomes…” she said and the ember in my hand quickly dissolved. If this ice turned to water I’d get the burn from the water like I did way back with the water bucket, other than this time it may kill me with how much water it’d turn into. Kai watched helplessly as the ice began going up my thighs. His hands were pulled behind his back and if he tried to use his water the girl would just freeze it. His gaze was still full of determination though. But then an idea came to his mind. It’d only freeze quickly if the water was at certain temperatures. Suddenly water began filling up a certain area around him.
“Ha. You think that’ll stop me,” she said, starting to freeze the water. But then the water began emitting steam and the ice was suddenly melted that she was making. The guy holding him hostage suddenly got out of the boiling hot water. I smiled, but looked down in despair as the ice was making its way up my torso and towards my neck. I could feel my breath becoming faint. The scalding water stopped inches from my legs and the girl cried in pain as the water hit her unprotected skin. The ice that was now climbing up my neck stopped and it all shattered into little pieces on my clothes. I got up slowly, the skin cold, red, and in a bit of pain from the severe condition it was just against. After I brushed the ice off me Lace looked at us and got up slowly and began backing away. Then, she turned away and ran as fast as she could. The guy that had been holding Kai was already long gone. Kai walked up to me and took my hand. He looked me in the eyes his eyes filled with worry.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“Y-yeah,” I said, barely getting it out. “It just hurts. The cold.” He looked at me and my now cold black jacket that was around my waist. Then, he unwrapped his blue jacket from his waist and put it on me. I felt the heat rush to my face and I quietly thanked him smiling slightly. I couldn’t ignore the look he gave me when I smiled as he turned away to look up to the peak.
“No problem,” he stated. “We’re not too far from the top now. They’re waiting for us to come now. But it’s late. We better get some rest. Also, can I see your leg wound? It may be healed.” I nodded, sitting down and unwrapping my blue scarf from my leg. The wound had mostly healed. The blood wasn’t coming out anymore as it was mostly closed up. I put the scarf back into my bag and Kai suggested we get some rest. We built a makeshift dirt house as the sun descended behind the horizon and the moon began to appear. Once inside and our beds were set up I sat down, exhausted over the few fights we had on the way up. But as I pulled the blanket over my body I couldn’t help but feel this ominous feeling that the girl from earlier was right about what she said…
