Description

This is the first one of a series of images depicting some of the items produced aboard the Shepherd. In order to be egligible for production, the product in question had to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Demands were high enough to keep the production running at all times for an extended period of time as retooling the cramped facilities proved to be a nightmare, even when the containers were docked off and landed on a habitable planet

  • The vast majority of components required to build the product had to fulfill one of the two categories:

    I. They were produced aboard the Shepherd or one of the other ships escorted by her

II. They were brought in from external sources, but they were required anyway to keep the ship running OR to fulfill its main duty of starfighter and allied freighter repair and maintenance

  • If the item wasn't mass-produced, it had to be complex enough to occupy the assigned production line just like a mass-produced item, even if the actual production run was basically semi-unique

  • With that out of the way:

    the Thermal Imploder.

    -= Capsule =-

Unlike other grenades or explosives, thermal imploders didn't bring the oxidizer required to cause a detonation. Instead, they relied on an atmosphere with enough oxygen in it in order to work. A thermal imploder worked by spontaneously releasing a cloud of engine fuel into the atmosphere, creating an explosive mixture which was detonated by a small delayed charge. The explosion caused the entire atmosphere within the fuel cloud to be burned up immediately, causing a vaccum which then instantly imploded, crushing anything within the blast radius.

With no oxydizer in the filling, the yield of the thermal imploder was massive, only topped by the even more extreme thermal detonator and a few other highly volatile explosives. A single thermal imploder could easily wipe out an entire imperial squad, and even damage turrets and AT-STs. That made them popular among rebel ground troopers and a feared sight for the Imps, who frequently „backed off a bit“ whenever they spotted a rebel toying around with a thermal imploder instead of running the chance to be crushed in the blast.

    -= Reasoning for production =-

Thermal imploders only required a small pressurized container filled with common fuel and two small detonite charges to be produced. Both the fuel and the container could be either produced aboard or shipped in and were used for other applications as well (obviously), while the Detonite was easy to come by and also was the component for other products leaving the Shepherd's assembly lines, creating enough demand to justify the procurement.
