EDIT 2: Some people have noted that their SAI does not do this. It is because it is not an updated version of SAI that supports transparency. There used to be a journal/ link that I had in the comments which led to a Transparency-supporting SAI, but this link is now down. I do not have a new link; please research and find a transparency-supportive SAI by your own means. My first tutorial lolol //fail
A lot of people have been asking me how to do transparent backgrounds in Paint TOOL SAI. There weren't any tutorials on dA that seemed to be as simple as how I did it (there were barely any in the first place so.)
If you have some trouble understanding the summarized pictures, here's some more info on it.
Basically, in SAI everything you draw is automatically "transparent". When you save as JPEG, which doesn't support transparency, everything "transparent" is turned to white, like how you see it when you are drawing in the program.
Adding a new layer underneath and making it a different color allows you to see things you missed, preferably the whites. Let's say that when I added the yellow, Casey's white hoodie turned yellow also. That means I need to go in and color it white or else it will become transparent as well.
Saving it as 32bpp makes all the areas you didn't draw on turn transparent.
Some tutorials say that you have to merge all your layers into 1. That is not true. I could have had 3 or 4 layers on that Casey picture, it doesn't affect transparency.
I hope you guys find this helpfull!

I forgot to say this a couple months ago. Thank you so much, this tutorial saved my life. Other videos/tutorials really didn't help/were too complicated, but yours was easy, simple, and helpful. Thank you, myself and loads of other people really appreciate you making this tutorial. I feel bad for you, since some people are too stupid to read the description, and its EVEN in the tutorial itself. *facepalm*
Sorry for the bold, just wanted to help you a bit with that problem, but it probably won't work.

Yes, this helps a lot omg *u*
but I have a rather.. err... Unrelated question?
I've been searching all day, and I don't know what it's called, but, When you write, how do you get the black lines around your white writing?? It's been bothering me to no end, and I can't figure it out! Thanks in advance ;u;

whitty-boo In reply to kagamine-iza [2013-06-05 22:18:09 +0000 UTC]
write everything
select all of your writing
move it around (so make sure your writing is on its own layer)
Select> Increment
Create a new layer underneath
color in the selected parts underneath the writing.

For some reasons I don't know the software don't ask me for the "24 bpp or 32bpp" so it doesn't work... TwT Did you know why?

Hey just wanted to say:
"Thank you so much!"
you really saved me in a pinch!
ive been doing tutorials in Anime Studio Pro 9 and it finally asked for me to make a drawing and export to ASP and i immediately launched SAI thinking my version had the pre-req's...
I have never been so wrong before in my life
world got turned upside down when my SAI files saved as .PNG's WOULD NOT so as transparent even though i saved them as such in my older version (basically that last window with the 32bpp was not there)...so naturally i flipped!
i consolidated all my art files with SAI i wanted to keep and uninstalled the older version and began searching for this 1.1.0 version that has the transparency capabilities on it.
i found a full version already in English with extra brushes and with transparency capabilities working download on Tumblr...i downloaded, extracted, created desktop shortcut, re-launched and to my relief i could still view and use all art pieces made before hand with old version and i also noticed already English format and many more brushes already made... plus...my ultimate goal was completed...
the transparency saved as .PNG files works as it should with the 32bpp window popping up as so and to prove i imported a random background into Anime Studio pro 9 and i imported a png file saved with the transparency and coordinated the layers with background on bottom and my trans. .PNG file on top in the layers menu in ASP9 and it worked, even made a little animation...so this is all good and working as of 6/3/13....
You have no idea how much trouble you saved me cuz i thought SAI couldn't trans a PNG file but it can that takes a huge step out of my animation process, now my Chars. don't have to go through gimp and get cut out then processed then transferred to ASP9 just SAI and ASP9 now...so thank you so much for the help im so relieved
