They chase anyone they catch unawares in the woods all night, only to disappear at sunrise. Those who escape their pursuit have nightmares of being chased for months after.

Description

They evolve from Anthenian Houndour. Johtonian Houndour and Houndoom are not found in Anthen. In fact, the Anthenian variants only appeared in the last decade. Researchers have been unable to find clues about how they came to be, but there are rumours that they came from another world entirely. One that lies hidden from mortal eyes.

These Houndoom live for the chase. They'll chase down anything fast-moving; cars, wagons, other Pokémon. They’re harmless during the day but don't run into them at night. It's said they become rabid with glee when they finally catch their prey and will do one of two things to celebrate; dance or tear their catch to shreds. With eternally flaming eyes and a striking white coat, they stand out like a beacon in the night. They are most active when the moon is full and on the night of Hallowed Eve.

They have strange preferences and habits – they refuse to eat unless the food has been left out to go stale, and they purposely chew as noisily as possible when they do. At times, they'll dance and howl as though following a song no one else can hear. Studies into their howls show a pattern with a recurring melody. Their howl has the peculiar ability to hypnotise other dog Pokémon. They'll lure them out of their homes and down the streets in a dancing procession, having a grand time. They relinquish control of the Pokémon by morning and go on their merry way.

The one thing they're terrified of is Anthenian Meowth. They turn tail at the sight of them and run the other way as quick as they can. This has made those Meowth popular to have around.

Posting here to add to latest chapter of my fanfic, Vibrant Hearts on ao3. Anthenian Houndour and Houndoom are based on Cŵn Annwn, or the Hounds of Annwn in Welsh folklore. White, spectral hunting hounds that the King of the Welsh underworld took on Wild Hunts. I really love them, and they're sometimes referred to as hellhounds, so I thought they fit Houndour and Houndoom quite well. Also partially inspired by Barguest, who would round up dogs in communities and run through the streets with them howling.
