Within the vast untamed jungle there existed two beings, both believed to be immortal. However, only one of the two was truly immortal and a true god at that but he knew time was running out for him. His legacy was starting to crumble alongside the decaying ruins he guarded, and when it truly fell apart, it was the end for him. Yet he had no heir, no tangible offspring to carry on his legacy and the legacy of the people he once protected. Even worse, the universe seemed to be against him. He could it in his feathers, in the uneasiness of the night. He needed an heir, someone who was as strong as the panther protecting their kill, as fast as the viper when it lashed out and as knowledgeable as the ape who could see the world from the treetops. He wanted to wait for the day destiny gave him the lover it promised him but how could he when he felt each second of each moment trickling away from him like grains of sand. He only knew one dove who currently meet those requirements, just the one.

Te’fia knew she was mortal, she would die one day just like the others around her. Even the fiercest of panthers met their end to Death’s sweet lull. But she was in a predicament, she had been silently chosen as the guardian of the jungle and its inhabitants inside, including the tribe of people who left offerings to her. When she died, who would protect them if she had no heir? She had to fix this issue but it wasn't one so easily fixed. She needed a strong heir, one who was as strong as the fiercest of jaguars, swifter than the fastest of eagles and as silent as the snakes within the trees. There weren't many rooks that she knew who could fulfill the requirements she had, all except one. Just the one.

Both guardians, the guardian of the ruins and the guardian of the jungle, knew their time was running out. They knew they needed to have an heir soon and train them with sufficient time for their future role. Although one was willing to make one without her heart's consent and the other wanted his heart's consent. He was waiting for the day his foretold lover would enter his life but he didn't know how much longer he could and would have to wait. However, everything would be thrown out upon the arrival of the blue moon, there was one option.

    Just one...

Tezcalipoca swallowed thickly as he peered at the moon slowly rising high like a fat cat, taunting him. The prairie had finally found the lover destiny had promised him and yet it was cruel. It was the first blue moon ever since he and the dove Te’fia struck a compromise for the dilemma they had: every blue moon, they swore, they would get together to produce an heir to train them and raise them for their future life as guardians. A month after it had been decided, he had stumbled upon Xolotl, the jaguar had fallen hard for the pearl rook over the past few months. It was unfortunate that the first night of this compromise had to fall when he had finally found his head, and someone he could make an heir with. He had wanted his firstborn to be with someone he loved but...he gave a snort. It was duty over everything, including his heart. He knew this yet it was no reassurance to the ache he felt. Peering at the moonlit white form of Xolotl sleeping a good distance away in a nest of pillows, Tezcalipoca stood up and left the temple, silent as the night.

Te’fia stared at the moon, it’s shape being reflected within her green eyes for a moment before she looked away. She knew what it was and what it meant and she had no regrets. She had chosen a good sire for her heir and that was what reassured her as she ran through the jungle. Skillfully she weaved her black body through the trees as if she could do it in her sleep, and she probably could. She knew these trees like the back of her palm, she had grown up here and lived here for years. To not have known them would have been anything less than disgraceful. As she neared the rendezvous spot, her eyes grew alert as they scanned the area for the large prairie known as Tezcalipoca. And soon, she saw him. The jaguar-like kukuri came into vision as he walked forward to the entrance of the ruin, a lit torch in his mouth as he stood there, expectantly. He knew she was there, hiding in the shadows of the trees. He had learned since the first time they had met. She slipped out of the covers of the trees, revealing herself to him as she walked over to him with confident, smooth steps. Soon enough, her black fur was highlighted by the orange light of the torch as she looked up at Tezcalipoca. The prairie looked down on her, blue orbs shining due to the fire’s light before he looked away, his eyes clouding. A small smile appeared on her face, she knew the prairie had fallen in love and she had expected him to try and fight her, seems like that was not the case. Not that she was surprised of course, she knew he was a rook of his word, a trait she admired. But, she knew he was suffering, she didn’t know the pain he was feeling but it was evident. Touching his shoulder with a quick yet soft pat of her hand, she withdrew it as she gave him a knowing look.

“I admire your integrity to hold your word about our compromise.” She stated, voice firm yet soft at the same time. “You are a rook of your word despite your heart being your enemy. That is an honorable feat.”

Tezcalipoca’s dark orbs shifted to look at her as she spoke. He hadn’t expected that out the dove. Taking in a deep breath and letting it out as a sigh, he gave a small nod.

“Of course. An honorable god always puts his duty above everything else.” He replied back, voice heavy with sadness.

The prairie turned away from her, beginning to walk towards the back of the ruins, the fire of the torch flickering in the empty night. The feathers on his head which were normally lifted high and proud were held low, giving away the prairie’s current emotional state. Te’fia followed after him, her steps silent as she held her head up yet it was bowed. She was not as cold as many believed her to be and she knew when a sacrifice was being made.

The two made their way through the crumbling ruins that Tezcalipoca made as his home. Once great pillars that contained sacred runes that belonged to the gods, were now worn down. The meticulous runes were wiped away by the elements, leaving only stone. Everywhere one looked were pieces of stone, tattered clothes billowing on the end of broken poles. The remains of past fires from thousands of years ago were scattered all over the floor. All these things were things Tezcalipoca pushed aside from their path using a foot. His expression was pained as his eyes followed everything he pushed aside. He was casting aside his history, the remains of his people. The very essence of why he had been created at all.

The one thing that had followed them since the entrance was silence. A heavy silence that lingered and one that neither tried to break. Te’fia let the prairie mourn his emotions in silence as she took in her surroundings. She couldn’t see what Tezcalipoca saw in these ruins. She couldn’t see what was the worth. Couldn’t he just move on with his life and hold the memories he has close? She gave a snort thinking about it, but then again, it was that emotional depth she wanted in her heir.

“We are nearing the temple I have arranged for your stay.” The prairie informed, his voice stiff.

“Is it not the temple in which you always dwell in?” Te’fia questioned, green eyes flickering.

    Tezcalipoca shook his head.

“No. It is far too dangerous for an expectant mother and her pups. I have found a smaller one and a much better one at that.” He took a deep breath as he slowed to a stop in front of the building.

He turned to the dove as he held his head high. The smaller temple was wider and lower to the ground. It’s style resembled the rest of the ruins and it wasn’t as degraded as the rest of the ruins either.

“We have gone ahead to provide a source of clean water as well as fine cloths and bedding. Your room will be in the west end.” He explained as he turned to look at the building “You are not to leave the temple and are to rest during the time the eggs need incubation. We will provide food and any other needs you should have once the sun sets.”

Te’fia’s lips began to curl back. She wasn’t to leave? How was she supposed to guard her territory from intruders and her charges? As she opened her mouth to appeal the prairie’s orders, he raised a finger.

“This Tezcalipoca will look over your territory during the duration of your stay here. You have this god’s word that nothing will happen to it.” Tezcalipoca’s stare grew as cold as ice as Te’fia backed down.

“I agree to these terms.” She replied back smoothly as the prairie nodded to her as he motioned for her to climb.

The dove began to climb the stone stairs quickly as Tezcalipoca followed behind with large steps. The moonlight caused his fur to turn a white, making his feathers pop out even more and Te’fia felt her heart quicken. She could hardly believe this was going to happen yet it seemed her body knew as it seemed to crave the prairie’s touch. She withheld herself however. What type of guardian would she be if she did not know discipline and restraint?

As she made her way to the top, she stepped inside to be greeted by pelts of many animals laid out on the ground as if a carpet of sorts; within view she could already identify many of the animals: jaguars, panthers, okapi, capybara and even an alligator. Towards the end of the entrance room there curtains covering the beginning to the main room. Glancing at Tezcalipoca and earning a nod of approval from him, she made her way into the main room with confident steps as if she owned the place. Using her head to part the thin curtains, chiseled walls full of runs greeted her. Along the walls were runes and paintings who were starting to fade. Within the middle of the room was a large pool of clean water, untouched by the filth of the ages. Large pillows, blankets and pelts were past the pool against the back wall. Large columns and pillars held up a roof that seemed to have no end with vines and other tropical plants living amongst the cracks.

“Why is this not my room?” She demanded quietly as she felt her heart pounding in her ears as she stared at everything in awe.

“Because it is dangerous for the pups due to the danger of drowning that the pool provides. Not to mention because there is no solid door between this room and entrance room, they could fall down the stairs.” Tezcalipoca informed as he came into the room, walking up to her.

Te’fia looked up at him to notice that his expression had changed, it was no longer strained nor pained. If any it appeared more relaxed yet there was a stormy look in his eyes.

“Do you doubt me and my capabilities?” She questioned as his gaze didn’t waver.

“No but I do not want to tempt fate. I do not want to take any chances and regret it later.” He replied, his voice sounding remorseful before he let out a sigh.

“I see…” She let out as she lied down on the nest of pillows, pelts and blankets.

It was surprisingly comfortable, she noted as she rolled over onto her side. Tezcalipoca lied down hesitantly next to her as Te’fia moved her head to look at him. He still looked...conflicted. His body was starting to relax but his eyes said it all. Lifting her head, she licked the underside of his mouth as his eyes moved down to look at her.

“Forget about your heart for tonight and the rest of your problems. I will help you to forget but you must also play your part. After All, we both made a compromise on this night of the blue moon.”  Te’fia murmured out as she looked at him.

She knew she was acting weird, it wasn’t her brain who had control now. If it did, then it would be harder for her to fulfill her end of the bargain like Tezcalipoca was. It seemed the small action with her words had done it as the prairie let out a low rumbly growl as he nuzzled the side of her neck with the side of his head.

“Just for this blue moon.”
