"So what do you have planned captain?" She asked, voice smooth yet teasing.

Light green eyes moved to stare at the voice's owner, a small burgendy-crimson colored dove with a dark head, his companion. Xenon let out a small chuckle as he turned around to face her.

"Nothing per usual. We let the stars, the sun and the wind take us where it wants to." He replied, the window billowing his blue fur as Pheo gave him a wide cheeky smile.

"That's what I like to hear." She chimed out as she stood forward on the edge of her toes, ready to bolt forward.

Xenon walked up to her, raising his head and tilting it up to take several deep breaths of the air. He could smell the familiar smell of salt that clung to the air. Salt and water. Only one thing could have both of those smells and was always a sight to behold: a beach.

"Do you smell what I smell?" He asked, looking down at Pheo.

"Aye aye captain! The salty waves of the ocean, our home!" She chirped back, already beginning to head in the direction the air was coming from.

Xenon let out a small chuckle at her words. "Being a pirate today are we?" He called out as he followed behind her with slow steps as if he had all the time in the world.

"Mhm! I thought it would 'sail' our little ship called adventure." She mused with a small wink aimed at the rook behind her.

Pheo bounded ahead, her white rump of a tail giving a small shake before it disappeared into the trees. The small crimson dove looked around with wide yellow eyes as her ears were up and alert. She was energetic and fast, small and light on her feet, if she found danger she would be able to run away and warn Xenon. That was usually how the pair went, she was the speedy scout while Xenon was the one who got them out of trouble if they ever got into any and oh boy did they get into trouble. As the dove went farther and farther into the redwood forest around them, she took in the scenery around her, in sheer awe at the size of the trees that seemed to reach up to the sky. Moist soil under her feet was almost a blessing compared to the scorching sands and other ground they had treaded on before in other locations.

However the dove didn't notice the dark creature that had been hiding, invisible from her nose and ears as it stayed away from her field of vision up in the high branches of the trees above. Slowly with each passing heartbeat from the dove, it crept closer and closer to her with a gait similar to how a chameleon walked. Pheo had no clue what was coming as a loud shriek broke the silence of the air and as a giant mass hit her, slamming her into the ground. Her ears had furled back as her eyes shot wide open in surprise and shock. The dove had tried to scramble away in time but the creature had the element of surprise. Pheo let out a loud wheeze of a shrill shriek as she felt the large slimy creature pin her down. It was pure black with melting orange eyes, an appearance similar to the shroomies that had recently plagued the land but this one did not have liquid spilling out or fungus growing on it, meaning it was a different creature entirely. The crimson kukuri's heart raced as she struggled from underneath the heavy creature, trying to claw and snap at it to no avail. It had slammed her down on her side, preventing effective usage of her legs and mouth.

Xenon heard the loud high pitched shriek following by another different sounding one as his blood froze over. It had come from the direction Pheo had went in. 'Gods, dear gods, don't let it be her!' He thought to himself in panic as his legs jumped into a sprint. The rook began a blue blurr amongst red trees with the dark creature growing bigger as he approached it.

Pheo's fur was bristling as she curled her mouth into a snarl. Xenon would no doubt come to her rescue but she didn't want him to get hurt. Not only would it be dangerous as he'd be weakened, but she'd feel guilty as sin for it since she had came running headfirst into danger practically. Of course she hadn't known the creature would be here but still!

All of a sudden she saw the creature jerk and let out a shrill shriek as a blue form tackled into it horn first. It whipped its head around, its grip on her loosening as it turned to face its assailant. Pheo used the window of opputurnity as she wiggled under the creature's claws, squirming until she finally felt its claws release her. Staggering to her feet, she looked up to see and hear the creature's hisses and roars as Xenon would run around it before sprinting in for an attack and then retreating to pull the same stunt again.

"Xenon I'm safe! Don't worry about me!" She called out, her face growing relieved when it seemed the rook heard her before a look of horror overcame her as the rook got hit with a giant hand.

The short tailed dove saw as the azure rook went flying and how his body flew into the thick trunk of a tree before he crumpled on the ground. The creature meanwhile turned its eyes back to Pheo as her body began to tremble from a cocktail of emotions. With a hiss, she charged at it, jumping up as it lowered its head to land a powerful kick onto the top of its head. The creature let out a final shrill roar before it shook its head, throwing Pheo off before it quickly slunk away.

Without waiting, she hurried over towards Xenon, crouching by him.

"Xenon! Xenon! Are you alright? What were you thinking?"

To her relief, the rook's head raised itself look at her.

"I- I couldn't let anything happen to you, I wouldn't forgive myself if they hurt my first mate." He replied, his voice soft as Pheo shook her head.

"Now's not a time to be role-playing like a captain, Xenon!" She outbursted, clearly upset by the events that had transpired.

Xenon's eyes were soft and gave no clue that he was lying as he looked up at her. "I'm not."

Pheo's yellow eyes widened as she fell onto her bum on the ground, sitting down from the sheer weight of what he was implying. She watched as the weakened azure rook slowly moved to sit up and move closer to her with slowed movements. She could tell the hit had done a number on him but not enough to cause true damage. If any it was just minor recoil thankfully. Nonetheless, she would yell at him more if she could. The chicken-like kukuri had panicked seeing her traveling companion and best friend in such a state...more so than she should have maybe.

Just maybe.

Her eyes shifted before looking away as Xenon stared at her with a gaze as soft as down. She then looked at him, taking a deep breath, her gaze searching.

"So...you're not joking around? You...you really mean it?" She asked, her voice hushed in minor disbelief.

He nodded.

"Of course...I wouldn't lie about something like that. I-I don't know what I would've done if I'd lost you. I-it made me realize things aren't the same without you. Traveling isn't the same. The sun wouldn't be so bright and new sights wouldn't set my heart alight." He confessed, his cheeks starting to grow warm as he rubbed the side of his neck. "I guess you can say this captain found the treasure he'd been searching the seven seas, and it had been next to him all this time."

Pheo could feel her mouth part, her eyes widened like saucers as a big smile overcame her face and she threw herself at the rook. Xenon let out a surprised 'oof' as he fell to the ground with his companion on top of him. The two were smiling, laughing as Pheo nuzzled the side of his face.

"Well captain, you had always been a bit of an oblivious man." She joked around, chuckling as Xenon let out chuckles of his own.

"I suppose I have been huh? Then I should make it clear for not just myself but others as well that I own the treasure of the world." He looked up before looking back down to Pheo again. "Will you grant me that privilege-"

He was silenced by a finger to his mouth, warm yellow eyes full of love looking back at him as she murmured the words with laughter and happiness in her voice.

"Did you even have to ask captain?"
