Description
Since when has rules ever stopped a budding necromancer? After all, the art of reviving the dead in itself was breaking one of the biggest rules the world had: the dead stayed dead and the living were living until they died. Maybe that’s why she held her new found puppy in her arms without asking her caretakers whether or not it was fine. Maybe that was why she had tried to sneak in the puppy, her new soon to be friend. For whatever reason it was, one thing was sure:

Things never went according to plan.

Danjuro remembered the smell of salt and the sounds of water lapping up against the sand near him. He didn’t know the word for where he was at, but he would soon learn it was called a beach. What he also remembered and knew for sure was that he was hungry, his stomach wouldn’t let him hear the end of it. The newborn pup wiggled and squirmed around in the wet sand, trying to feel for something he could eat. His eyes weren’t quite open so his other senses were what he was relying on.

But he couldn’t find anything. He had to open his eyes, had to see and find something to eat, had to-

Purple eyes cracked open, blinking sluggishly as something brown and blurry took up his vision. Blinking a few more times, his eyes fully opened to see it was...a weird furless kukuri? They had fur around their head and weird leaves on their body, but where was their tail? Danjuro let out cries, their hands pawing the ground and tail wiggling as they begged for food. This weird kukuri had to help!

Esme hadn’t stopped for a long time but the beautiful sight of the sea at sunset had been enough to get her to slow down to watch the crimson blood stained waves lap against the sand. Moving away from solid land, her feet touched the sand as she moved closer to the water. She turned her head and glanced for a quick moment to see if anyone was following her, thankfully no.

As she got closer to the water, she could see there was a shape next to the water’s edge and could hear its cries. Stepping towards the sound, she saw it was a pup, a kukuri pup, all alone. It must have barely hatched, she deduced, because its egg shells were around it with the smaller pieces being swept away by the water.

“Hey there lil’ guy, you all alone?” She cooed out, crouching as she watched the kukuri pup wiggle towards her.

Esme moved a hand to reach out and touch Danjuro only for the puppy to gnaw on her fingers as she quickly pulled it back.

“Hey hey! I’m not food!” The necromancer hissed out as Danjuro let out more cries. She shook out her finger a bit more before picking up the kukuri pup, lifting him up.

“You must be hungry huh? Otherwise you wouldn’t go eating my finger like that-”

What would she do? She couldn’t just leave them there but she couldn’t really bring them up either. No doubt she’d get in trouble...but then again, when did she care about getting into trouble. It wasn’t like she was doing anything really bad, and after all she was working on bringing back the dead. That broke a major rule as is.

Well with reasoning like that you couldn’t go wrong, so she nestled the puppy into her arms and began to walk back ‘home’.

Danjuro was as squiggly as a noodle in her arms, not quite understanding what she was doing. He wanted food! Not to be held, food! He tried telling her, letting out loud, long cries and all she would do is chitter back, unintelligibly. They started moving as Danjuro eventually gave up for now, resigning to letting out hungry chirps every few minutes, a reminder that he was hungry.

It wasn’t too long before the duo approached home base, Esme’s ‘home’. It wasn’t really a home but it was a start. It was better than being on the lam without a break.

Esme was walking up the main pathway when a loud scree made her stop in her tracks. Right. The kukuri pup. She needed to come up with a name for him and sneak him in somehow. It was night by now and everyone was going to be going to dinner soon. She’d be able to sneak him in no problem. Just had to time everything right and quiet him of course. But with that thought, Danjuro seemed to have read it because he started letting out loud cries once more. The young necromancer flinched, silencing him with a finger to her mouth and a loud ‘SHH’.

She swore the pup almost looked indignant at that but was silent. Esme scurried over to the nearest window, crouching and staying under it as she then stretched up a bit to get a better look at things. It was the main hallway and there was no one around meaning her hunch was right and everyone was indeed at dinner. Perfect. Moving Danjuro onto her shoulder, she prayed the pup would cling to her and he did, good. That left her with both her hands able to push up to the window and after struggling for a few moments, it went up.

Raising her hand, she grabbed the window frame before hoisting herself up with a grunt. Falling from the frame and landing onto the ground as graceful as a newborn kitten. Danjuro let out a surprised bubbling noise as she got up and moved into the hall. Pressing herself against the wall, she turned her head to look down the turn to see if anyone was there. All clear.

Moving her feet quickly, Esme made her way down the hall, Danjuro still silent. How would it last though? The hunger in the pup’s stomach grew stronger and stronger, biding its time until soon he would no longer be able to hold it. This of course, Esme knew which is why she moved quickly. Closer and closer they got to their obstacle, the mess hall. Everyone would be in there. If she could sneak past it then she would be able to make it back to her room and keep her pup. Her new soon-to-be friend.

Peering into the well lit grand room, the sounds of chattering along of many people holding conversations wafted to Danjuro’s and Esme’s ears. However, that wasn’t the only thing. Esme stared as the adults moved towards a riled up table and she took it as her cue. She broke out into a brisk walk as Danjuro start sniffing the air. Danjuro could feel his mouth water as his stomach began to cry out.

Small whines left the puppy’s mouth as Esme shushed him again, yet rather than stay quiet, the kukuri grew indignant. The hunger in him giving him boldness and attitude. This weird kukuri had been holding him for so long and hadn’t given him any food. He couldn’t take it any longer!

Just as Esme was about to reach the staircase, a loud shrill cry broke through the noisy room as dozens of heads turned to look at one thing.

Esme.
