Aisha had made a grueling journey from the bottom of the sea where she normally resided to visit the famous Festival of Death. The kukuri often couldn’t leave her home due to the predicament she was in. Suijin, the god of seas, had been kind enough to let her reside within his domain...which was at the bottom of the ocean. It was sunset when she had arrived, her feet aching from walking so long as small Queen’s Lace petals were stuck to her fur around her mouth. The orange petals characteristic of the festival were scattered everywhere on the ground along with the many stalls offering their wares. There were many humans and kukuri alike throughout the festival grounds, many of the kukuri had their noses to the air while others were hurrying behind their humans. The sight surprised Aisha, she hadn’t expected to see so many looking as if they were searching for something.

The dove walked towards a nearby stall, curiosity begging her to find out what was wrong.

“Whrat is wrung?” She asked, in awful sounding human English.

The vendor stared at her with wide eyes as they stepped away from the dove. Fear and shock was clear on their face, a Kukuri speaking human english? Unheard of! It was unnatural and strange. Aisha stepped back from the stall, her look guilty. She was about to apologize about scaring him but decided against it, the vendor was scared as is. She didn’t need to scare them any further. Aisha moved away from the stall, her floppy ears bouncing up and down. It was hard; living in this body. It was not an easy transition to die a human and wake up an animal. Not to mention the curse she had lived with in her final years had carried over despite Death’s generosity. It had been why she had traveled so much to visit the festival, she had heard Death made an appearance last year and Aisha had wished to personally thank her.

Stopping a rook that was running past her, she asked what was the commotion about and wasn’t expecting the answer she received: Death was missing. Horror shocked the poor dove. Missing? Her goddess was missing? Panic flooded her limbs as she stood there, eyes wide and trembling. No wonder everyone had been looking everywhere! And she had wasted precious moments when she could have been looking for Death. The glowing spots on her body grew brighter, heightened by her fear as she looked around. Where to start? Where to start?

Stepping away, Aisha began to move away from the heart of the festival and towards the farther rim. Death wouldn’t be there otherwise they would have found her already. Keeping her ears alert along with her eyes, she kept keenful observation as she left the festival and into the surrounding area. Light colored grass soon started to become wild and dark grass with the surrounding trees looking more and more untamed. Their branches curled and twisted, bark coarse and missing in some cases. Looking up, she could see why it was so dark, the sky was blocked out, by leaves or the branches themselves she didn’t know.

Thankfully she had a small source of light that was her own body, bio-luminescence came in handy in such situations. If Death was here, Aisha could see why, the forest was almost like a trap or labyrinth of sorts. Hard to navigate if you couldn’t get used to the darkness but wasn’t Death big enough to break through the forest’s walls? She wasn’t sure but she kept moving forward, eyes moving around to take in the scenery.

“Lady Death!” She called out “Lady Death are you here?”

Only silence was returned. Aisha grew more worried with each passing moment as she started to notice the blue growing mushrooms lining the trees. W-wait weren’t those the mushrooms from the Fungal contamination? The dove stopped, blood chilling. She had to get out of here, somehow she had stumbled upon the old remains of the forest affected by the bout before the remedy had been made. She didn’t know if contamination was still possible and she did not want to find out, so she turned around and sprinted out of the forest and back towards the sunlight.

As the bright sun washed over her, Aisha let out nervous chuckles of relief before her body jerked as coughs shook it. She raised her hands to her mouth as she felt a familiar liquid dribble out and opened her mouth due to the force, to let out marigold petals. She kept on coughing as more and more petals landed on the floor in a wet pile of petals and blood. Aisha stared at them as she swallowed thickly, wincing at the pain in her raw throat. A bitter reminder of the curse that plagued her and another reminder of what she owed Death.

She moved away from the forest and began to head towards the large statue of the goddess herself. Blinking, she could see the shapes of several Kukuri trying to climb it. Looks like she wasn’t going to find much luck there but a small prayer of faith wouldn’t help, even if it didn’t fall upon Death’s ears.

Aisha stepped towards the statue and sat down in front of its base, curling her tail around her as she sat in a form one would call a ‘loaf’. Arching her neck forward, she pressed her head against the statue and muttered hushed words of gratitude in a prayer to the benevolent deity. Strength, she needed strength and fidelity that she was going to get better. Her time was quickly running out with each twisted flower she coughed up and she hadn’t yet relished the second opportunity she had been given. As green orbs revealed themselves, she looked up at the statue before looking away with a small sigh. Only there, right next to her, did she notice a white feather lying clear in her field of vision and it was enough to send the dove crying silently. The feather’s message had been clear:

Your prayer has been heard.

Aisha lied next to the statue for a long time, sobbing and hoping for Death to appear. The dove wished for the deity to appear soon and to end the pain of waiting.
