`Silence. It was abnormally silent within the forest, especially at this time. The time when the crimson sun was being pulled back to Earth only to watch its lover, the moon rise in the sky from below. It was a cruel cycle the two heavenly bodies endured but both knew the refuge of at least being able to see their loved one bloom each and every single day. But there are times when the two meet, once every few months and embrace in a tender hold. Spilling the flood of emotions that they had kept hidden, the words that had been kept silent just for the other’s ears. For despite the two being of different personalities, the sun being brave, brash and tough on the outside, they were soft on the inside, needing reassurance to glow. The moon for as compassionate as they were, lacked the courage and strength that the sun had. For this one night of reunion, the two felt whole, each making up for what the other lacked…

`A shape rose over the hill’s edge, the red sunlight bathing over them as the shape shook their head. Exhaustion was clear in the way they walked, for their feet moved too slowly as if they carried weights on the end. A once proud and strong dove was now suffering at the mercy of the weight of the world being placed on her back. She couldn’t seek refuged with the others for she was perfect, strong, brave, an image they looked up to so what she to do? Nothing. She left them, assuring them she was merely going for a walk to clear up her mind only for her to hurry away. Long ears drooped and the once lit and youthful gaze was now dim. To the comfort of the forest’s solitude she sought in her times of weakness. Sheltered from prying eyes and embraced in the darkness next to a small pond that reflected the moon. It seemed rather cruel that every time she fled to the forest’s shelter, the moon was in a stage of renewing itself, hence hiding its light leaving Say’ri always in the dark, however this time seemed to be another story. For once in the many times she sought refuge by this pond, the moon hinted that it would show its light and Say’ri wondered why.

`They loved sunsets. It was the time of day when the sun showed its weakness and the moon rose to reveal the hidden creatures of the night. Picking flowers an hour or so before the sun set was a habit of theirs to help them see the sunset whenever they could. Maybe, now that they thought about it, they loved the sunset because their fur resembled the sky’s color during the event. Either way, they loved sunsets and today was one of those days when they had a handful of flowers and eyes full of wonder. They hurried towards the forest, small tail bobbing up and down as they ran towards the mirror-like pond. They liked going there for it showed the moonrise all while having a clear view of the sunset. A big grin was on their face as they hopped over a log, approaching the pond before a dark shape on the other side of the pond was coming into view. Kuiskaus began to slow down to a stop, still hidden by the trees but close enough to see the other clearly. The other was a dove, light fur cascaded from her neck onto the grass underneath with more chocolate colored fur drooping from her tail. They would have been a majestic sight if not for the look in their eyes.

“Miss, are you alright?” They asked, voice gentle and soft like the flowers they carried as they stepped out from under the trees.

`Say’ri looked up when a voice spoke up, her dull eyes hardening as weariness overcame her exhaustion for this moment. They crossed their arms, holding her head up as they met the other’s eyes.

“Yes I am. What would give you the reason for saying words such as those?” She questioned, raising an eyebrow at the rook as a sight caught her eyes: flowers.

`Flowers? Why were they carrying flowers? Not just any flowers, lilies. White lilies. She didn’t have time to wonder as Kuiskaus began to speak once more.

“Well Miss…” He began, voice awkward “ you looked mighty sad. I thought there might be something I can do to help. My name’s Kuiskaus by the way. ”

`Say’ri lowered her head and let out a sigh. She had been caught, no more use acting strong now and besides, this stranger was not part of their loaf. Nor did they recognize them. Surely there was no harm, letting their guard a tad here.

“You are not wrong Kuiskaus.” She began as she stared at the open space in between the groove of two trees which revealed the crimson sky.

`Kuiskaus followed the dove’s gaze to see the crimson sky as he took a careful step towards her.

“Then, would you like to talk about it Miss? My momma always told me that it’s good to talk about things that make us sad.” They offered, lowering their head as they turned their gaze back onto Say’ri.

`Say’ri continued to stare at the sky before motioning for Kuiskaus to sit next to her with a small nod.

“Yes, if it would not be much of a bother. It feels as if I am alone for the moment, destined to bear the weight of the world. The hopes and dreams of others.” The ebon dove murmured somberly as Kuiskaus approached her before sitting down a small distance away from her side.

“What do you mean by that miss?” Kuiskaus asked as he set down his flowers.

`Say’ri glanced at the flowers on the grass before turning back to the sunset.

“Do you ever feel like you are the sun for others? You provide light to their lives and in turn they expect you to be just as bright?” She began, voice growing calm yet guarded “That is the burden placed on a leader, a being such as I. You are expected to shine upon them and never falter with your light. Your knowledge. Your guidance. Your strength.” She paused to let out a deep breath “That is with what I have to endure by myself. It becomes too much to cope with some days and I find myself here, seeking shelter within the trees, for them to hold my secrets. My pain.”

`She uncrossed her arms to rub at the grass with a hand before looking into the pond. Kuiskaus followed her actions with curiosity and interest in his eyes as they shifted into a more comfortable position.

“I have Miss and it is an awfully lonely feeling, but you have to remember. We have weaknesses. We can’t always be this great big star in the sky, we sometimes have to fall for us to truly shine.” Kuiskaus advised as he looked up as the crimson sky began to grow a hue of purple.

“Even the sun falls each day you see. You are allowed to show weakness, and you have to, otherwise how are you ever going to get help?” The rook asked as he glanced at Say’ri “The sun may fall but it rises beautiful as ever the next day. I however, wish could be as strong as you, Miss.”

`Kuiskaus gave a small chuckle as they looked down on the flowers in his hands.

“I love too much but don’t have the strength to protect the things I love.” He admitted as he picked up a lily and offered it to her. “Would you like one Miss? I noticed you looking at them earlier…”

`His voice grew sheepish and trailed off as Say’ri, who’s eyes were wide in surprise at the rook’s profound words, moved back into the current time, nodding at his offer.

“That would please me a many, thank you.” She replied “For everything, not just the flower.” Her voice was full of gratitude yet soft as the fur on her chest.

`Say’ri looked up at the moon rising above with a small smile.

“You forgot something. Even as the sun as its faults, so does the moon hold beauty. Although it may not shine as brightly as the sun, it is calm and serene which is its own strengths. You are like the moon, you say you love everything, then that is good. Although you may not have the strength to protect the ones you love, you do to some degree. You just need a sun to shine behind you to give you strength.”

`Now it was Kuiskaus turn to be surprised, he looked at Say’ri with wide eyes as she stared at the flower in her hands. The dove looked up slowly at Kuiskaus with a knowing look, fully aware of her words as Kuiskaus’s ears folded back flustered.

“Miss, you don’t want a-” He began before he was interrupted.

“Say’ri.”

“Pardon?” Kuiskaus asked, tilting his head at her.

“My name is Say’ri.” The dove informed warmly “And you do not give yourself enough credit. I know what I want, and what rook would help another with their troubles. You have a big heart and know weakness, I want you to help me on the days I struggle and help me show my weakness. Like tonight.”

`Kuiskaus’s mouth curled into a big warm smile as his expression was one of pure happiness.

“I-I don’t know what to say Miss Say’ri but I’m mighty honored.” He murmured as he nuzzled the underside of Say’ri’s head as she returned the action.

`The two leaned against each other as the moon rose high in the sky, however it was not white but red. The signature of a Lunar Eclispe as red light shone in the pond. It was reflected in the water and it shone in the eyes of the two kukuri as Kuiskaus’s head was over Say’ri’s. The pair watched the red moon’s reflection in the water as Say’ri let the secrets she had held for some time, the same secret which had turned her body into stone, free. Kuiskaus had listened and had given her the same warm advice he had first given as he listened to the dove’s explanations on what strength was and how it was earned. It seemed, for just one night, the two had fufilled whatever weaknesses they had in the first place.

However, one final exchange of words was shared before the night ended.

"May I ask why you were carrying flowers when you stumbled upon me?" Say'ri questioned, looking up at Kuikaus as she rested against him.

"Oh, those were for if I ran into a sad and pretty dove such as yourself." Kuiskaus admitted teasingly
