Sapphire blue eyes stared at pale silver eyes, annoyed and stoic. The ocean’s waters and the frozen ice flows. The dove had her arms crossed as she tilted her head to look at the dark colored rook standing not too far from her. Nilanje was starting to grow more and more peeved as the seconds ticked by. The piebald rook wasn’t doing anything but merely stared at her and it was annoying her.

“Look, buddy, I’m sorry if me helping you in a bind hurt your macho pride alright? Wasn’t my intentions.” Nilanje finally spoke out, her arms loosening for one to stick out, gesturing while speaking. “S’not my nature to leave a dude in trouble behind, know what I mean? Nothing more to that. Wasn’t expecting anything in return so you can just chill and be on your way. Okay?”

The raven dove moved her head up, her ears moving upwards as she tucked her arm back in to cross her arms once more. Yet he didn’t move. Was that amusement in his eyes? The fur on the back of Nilanje’s neck began to rise up as her ears partially furled themselves back, indignation flashing in her eyes and ran hot in her veins for a split moment.

The slim and sleek dove resisted the urge to not whip around and demand what was so amusing but all she did was move her arms to use her hands and make motions on her chest as if she were dusting herself off. And just as she turned around to face forward, she came eye to eye with the rook, Noki, again.

Noki flicked a small ear, a motion to grab her attention, as he moved his hands to motion for her to follow as he moved back towards the trap she had freed him from. He normally didn’t fall into such things but he had been distracted when he had fallen victim. Distracted with what? Well, ladies weren’t the only one with their secrets.

Nilanje narrowed her eyes to squint at the rook before shaking her head.

“I ain’t going over there. I don’t know you and I know you fellas always have tricks up your sleeves. I ain’t falling for that crap.” She bluntly commented, her tone just screaming out ‘who do you take me for, stupid?’.

Her tail whipped side to side showing her annoyance. Why didn’t she just leave? He wasn’t holding her back or preventing her from leaving, she could freely go yet there she was talking to what might as well have been a wall. And it was starting to get annoying.

Noki continued to simply stare at her before continuing on further, not bothering to tell the dove to follow and if any, seemed to be doing the opposite.

Nilanje let out a low frustrated growl.

“Hhh, damn it!” She snarled out, hurrying after the rook.

Deeper into the trees he led her, walking over logs [or better yet, jumping over them in Nilanje’s case] towards the trap she had freed him from. After a brief moments, the trap that had been supposedly destroyed was back in place. The dove’s eyes widened at the realization her effort had been in vain. Noki seemed to have noticed this as he gave her a small nod.

“...There are better ways of springing a trap.” His deep voice informed.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Oh yeah? Why don’t you show me then. Prove it.”

“That is precisely what I intended to do.” He rumbled back in reply

Noki stepped on over towards the trap, skillfully avoiding it this time as he side steps, tail following in close pursuit behind him. “These traps are ones placed by humans, specially made to capture us kukuri. For what purpose I have no clue.”

The rook moved away, walking towards the nearby tree and pointed up with his snout to the net in the tree’s branches.

“The inexperienced ones use the thin ropes. Sometimes there are ones of a harder material that cannot be torn. For those there is no hope but to leave them unless you want to make your mouth raw and bloody your hands.”

Nilanje stared at Noki as he explained everything, where was he getting with this? She had let him go, her method worked and that was all, but morbid, bored curiosity kept her there. Her ears perked up as Noki moved towards the small wooden stake that had been pulled out from its hole in the ground, the rope and net having gone lose. Nilanje’s handiwork.

“The way you did is a temporary fix, it leaves it easy for the humans to set it up again easily.” Noki’s stoic voice critiqued “Pick up the rope and use your teeth to snap it.”

Nilanje gave a tilt of her head as Noki moved over the rope so a leg was on each side before bending down and gathering the rope in his mouth. He moved his head so she could see it before making a gesture for her to grab it. The luminescent dove cautious moved over, grabbing the rope in her mouth.

Blue eyes flickered with a questioning look as she raised an eyebrow at the piebald rook. Noki gave a dip of his head as Nilanje then jerked her head back, tightening it before she bit down, sharp teeth digging into it.

Snap.

Nilanje’s eyes widened in surprise as the rope in her mouth went limp. She spat it out.

“So that’s the better way? Seems awfully easy.” The dove pointed out, wary disbelief evident in her voice as her ears partially lowered themselves.

Noki gave a low chuckle, his ears perking up.

“I think I could’ve figured it out on my own. You don’t seem like the type of fella to take time out of his busy day to teach something that easy.” Nilanje continued as Noki gave small side tilts of his head.

“True but you also have to consider…” He began as Nilanje began to narrow her eyes, the rook taking a step closer to her.

“I would not have been able to spend so much time talking to someone such as yourself.”

“And what am I?”

“A snare with something caught.”
