So small and so frail.
So weak and so utterly...

helpless.

Mephistopheles questioned what he was still doing here, staring into the white blank eyes of the one he had made a bargain that had changed his life. This pup was not Death, no matter how many times those pathetic 'angels' preached and yet everyone seemed to fall for it. A dangerous game. That's what this was. Have them teach this pup about living? Wrong. Exploitable. Give the pup to the wrong creature and you have corrupted the budding goddess. Give them to overlynaive kukuri and you put her at risk. The whole plan was flawed. Ridiculous.

The demon never wanted a pup...not to care for another's that is. Perhaps at one point he may have considered a family with the handsome viking he had fallen for but caring for the fallen goddess was not part of his plan. Yet there he was. Staring and observing her like a lion with a mouse. Oncoming croons from behind him snapped his attention as he bore his fangs at the kukuri approaching the pup for their turn.

"Away! Away before I decide I desire your flesh." He snarled, snapping his jaws. He had no patience for them. It was like talking to a pig.

Overkill. But he didn't care. It did it's job and it did it well.

The kukuri let out a shrill fearful shriek as they turned around, forgetting about Death and only knew the preservation of their own life. Mephistopheles watched them run off, their eyes narrowing before turning their head back to the pup that was Death like a predator interrupted from their meal. Her eyes were wide, her feathers and fur puffed out and she let out a fearful chirrup as the rook took steps towards her. She let out a loud cry as he grasped her scruff in his mouth, stalking away from the noisy festival and into the nearby woods.

Not one of these mortals would be able to teach her about her supernatural nature, none. None of them had magic or demonic energy. None of them were smart. Intelligent. Cunning.

A suitable distance away, Mephistopheles placed the pup down on a tree stump. Click click, went his golden toe accessories. He looked terrifying to her, no doubt. Good. She needed to learn that he was one to be feared.

"You perhaps may not understand me but remember my words. Let them haunt you." He began, walking around the stump slowly, step by step. His tone a long drone as if giving a lecture, listing out the obvious. "You are no mortal. You are a goddess. Death. You were born with a duty and a cross to bear."

Fiery blue eyes landed upon the little Death, boring into her.

"You are the one everyone fears despite what you stand for. You grant them a safe haven in their times of need despite their fear of you. You can die, you have died but only because your own foolishness." The last few words were sharp, a hiss.

The small four winged pup stared at the rook, tilting her head, seeming more curious rather than fearful of him. Perhaps she thought his words were a story? He should try harder to make her understand- he shook his head. No. She could understand. He was sure of it.

"Your sister is your murderer I hear. Typical. It is always those closest to us, always those of blood." He shook his head, giving a flick of an ear. A fact he knew all too well. He had heard from sources that Faust was still hunting him down and seeking revenge. To be expected in all honesty. His brother had always been a stubborn oaf.

"You have all this immense power and you did nothing to stop such a simple attack. You really are...something." He breathed out as a loud squeak made him look at her once more.

The pup's ears were furled back as she opened her big mouth to let out another squeak of defiance. Mephistopheles moved towards her, crouching until calculating blue eyes stared back into the moons that were her's. Low amused chuckles like growls leaving him.

"Oh? She speaks. I was sure you were mute. Go on ahead, enlighten me." He gestured for her to continue with a sweeping motion of a hand, inviting her.

Death's eyes narrowed as she hopped onto her feet, spreading her wings wide and flapping them before stopping. She had them open as she hopped off the stump, jumping over a nearby toadstool to land on the ground, making more gestures.

Mephistopheles scratched his chin for a moment.

"Hmm. I'm afraid I don't understand. Such is to be expected when conversing with a child. The language barrier is one more worse than conversing with the crazy wench you had sent to me as my guide for this world."

A questioning curious chirp.

"Ah. You don't recall this guide? You should. It was part of the deal we struck. Surely you can recall such an important interaction."

A shake of her head.

Mephistopheles frowned. He knew the pup knew nothing but he had expected her to surely know the life-changing deal they had struck, even if it was a vague memory.

"You jest." He said lightly as if it were a funny joke coming to its punchline.

Another shake of her head. Mephistopheles's eyes were slowly filling with realization as his stomach began to sink.

"So you don't remember?"

Mephistopheles was disappointed to find out Death had forgotten things which belonged to her past self. The rook glared down, only seeing a child in the once great goddess of Death. This young creature had still a lot to learn and the kukuri wasn't sure how long it would take for them.
