Description
Rollo could not believe he was where he was. Nor could he remember how he even got into the mess that he was in. All he remembered was a white dove and poachers, and now he was hanging above the ground in a net with his tail dangling from one of the small holes that littered the net. He tried moving his head but he found it was stuck as well. Moving his eyes, it became clear why: his horns were tangled within the netting.

“Just my luck.” He grumbled out “I meet a pretty dove and I get snatched.”

“Need some help?” A light voice chimed out teasingly

“Who’s there?” The rook called out wearily “Friend or foe?”

“Who knows-” The voice replied as Rollo let out a sigh “It is up for you to decide.”

Rollo didn’t have much time to consider the stranger’s words as a dark blurr moved out of the trees before the net was being pulled down. He couldn’t see what was causing the net to move due to his head being forced up from his horns being stuck in the netting but whatever it was it was ripping the net. Soft growls reached his ears as the net bounced up and down from whatever was pulling away at it.

The word ‘there’ was breathed out and all of a sudden, Rollo let out a pained scream as he felt his body hit the ground with his head being forced up. His horns, they were still stuck! Oh gods, it hurt.

“I thought you had freed your horns, guess I was wrong.” The voice chimed out again as Rollo let out a snarl.

The pain flooding his body was taking priority than being nice to the stranger, who was surely the one who caused him to end up in such a position. His lips were curled back to reveal his sharp teeth and his pupils were shrunken as his chest rose and fell quickly from the sharp, pained breaths he took.

“Get me out of here!” He snarled out as he heard the scrabbling of claws against wood followed by a small ‘snap’ before he felt the pull from his head go loose.

The ropes snapped loose, releasing Rollo from the painful predicament he had been in but the netting was dangling loose from his horns as lowered his head to rub at it with his hands.

“There, now we’re even.” The voice spoke again, this time sounding relieved.
Rollo’s face grew into one of confusion. Even? What on earth did they mean?

“What do you mea-” He began as he raised his head, just in time to see a dark tail tip slip into the trees.

Curiosity and the need to know fueled his feet to stumble forward before he ran after the tail’s owner, slipping into the trees after them.

“Wait please! What do you mean even?” Rollo hollered out, raising a hand before he felt something under him.

He tripped over it, causing him to be launched into the air before he landed onto the ground rolling before he was forced to stop by crashing into a tree. Leaves rained over him as his eyes were half lidded from the incident. A blurry shape came into view and he struggled to focus but the image just wouldn’t.

“I suggest you don’t follow me, these woods are dangerous for someone like you. I’m just repaying you for saving my sister earlier from those poachers.” They spoke, their words sounding distant to Rollo’s ringing ears.

As the shape began to move again, he forced himself to his feet, causing him to wobble a bit before the world came into focus. Dark arms shot out to clutch at his head as the ringing began to slowly fade away yet he still didn’t feel adjusted or calibrated.

“Whoa there. You shouldn’t get up so quickly.” The voice spoke as its owner slowly came into view.

Rollo’s eyes slowly widened as the dove came into focus. An elegant-built, charcoal-colored dove with slender ram horns came into clarity and Rollo felt his heart skip a beat.

Raksha let out an amused chuckle at his reaction as she released his head with half-lidded eyes.

“There.” She crooned out  “You need to be more careful for my sister’s sake if not yours. She came to crying about some rook that saved her from a loaf of bad humans.”

Raksha’s ears furled back as she curled her lips back.

“You better not have done anything to her.” She growled out lowly as Rollo was dazed staring at her before he jerked his head to alertness.

“NO!” He shouted out quickly “Nothing! I did nothing I assure you! I just shoved her out of the way when she stepped on the trap.” He informed with a sigh.

It surprised him as the dove’s fierce expression melted back into its sly look as she gave him a small smile.

“Good. Now we’re even then.” And with that, she turned around and began to walk away as Rollo shook his head.

“Mind if I tag along? Y’know, to see if your sister is okay? You said she was crying after me, it might be better if she could see that i’m alright.” He suggested as he walked up to her.

Raksha let out a sigh, followed by amused laughter.

“Alright.” She agreed as she glanced at him and motion for him to follow as Rollo smiled.

“Rollo’s my name by the way. And i’d say we’re not even, you did improperly cut the net that my horns were still painfully stuck.” He pointed out cheekily as Raksha raised an eyebrow muscle.

“Oh? I told you it’s because I expected you to remove them beforehand.” She retorted, shaking her head “What do you want me to do about it?”

Rollo gave her a smirk.

“How about letting me know your name? Afterall, I should know the name of the brave knight who saved me.”

“Oh so you’re a princess now?” She pointed out laughing before she began to slowly calm down enough to say her name. “Raksha.”

Rollo felt warmth lick his face underneath his fur as he shook his head quickly in his embarrassment. He wasn’t used to a dove replying so smoothly to his advances. It might as well been considered true however. He had been the damsel in distress and she had been his knight in shining armor. Besides, who said doves couldn’t be knights? The image was almost flattering, him and her, a princess and his knight.

“I suppose I am, after all you saved me back there m’lady.” He responded back coyly with a chuckle as he bowed before her. “Ah bad on me, I forgot it is the knight that needs to bow to her princess.”

Raksha stared at him, amusement plain as day in her eyes as a gleeful yet mischievous smile graced her face. Her ears perked up as she turned to him, and began to lower her front half in a bow.

“My sincerest apologies my dear princess! I had no idea what has come over me!” She bellowed out in mock distress “I am so happy that the heavens could hear my heart jump with glee at your safety.”

Rollo took a step back, caught off guard by the dove’s actions. He hadn’t expected that either, nor was he expecting her to stand up straight and walk towards him with wide, inviting steps.

“Alas, the heavens could testify the way my heart feels now but perhaps a much more tangible way could be arranged. Afterall, I suppose I could let princess show his gratitude to his loyal knight if it wasn’t much?” She chided out, staring at him with half-lidded eyes as Rollo’s face flared up even more.

“I-I-” He stammered out, swallowing thickly as Raksha headbutted his shoulder playfully.

“I am just fooling around, Rollo, was it?” She chuckled out as her tail moved to close his gaping jaw. “Do not tell me you fell for it?”

The raven rook felt his pelt sear with guilt, he had bought into it. He was infatuated with this dove and he was pretty sure she knew it.

“N-no. I-I didn’t fall for it.” He let out, taking a deep breath and puffing out his chest. “I didn’t.” He said more firmly, more confidently.

“What a shame, you know there was some truth to those words. It is a shame you did not fall for my offer.” Raksha murmured out in a smooth yet mock melancholy voice as she turned away from him.

The dove began to walk away as Rollo lowered his head to drag his hands down his face. This dove, she was outfoxing him. He wasn’t used to being in a situation like this and he had met a lot of doves before. But then again, he always minded a bit of a challenge, afterall, hadn’t that been the reason why he had been sweet talking a pearl dove when she had her heavily scarred amber rook nearby? Well, time to pull out the big guns Rollo.

Taking a deep breath, he charged towards her before letting out a hollar of fake surprise as he delayed the movement of one of his feet. This action caused a tripping motion from him as he slammed into Raksha, causing her to hit the ground and throw leaves up into the air. Rollo hadn’t even noticed he had his eyes closed until he heard heavy breathing near his ear and only saw darkness. Opening his eyes slowly, he saw Raksha underneath him looking at him with wide eyes. A deer in the headlights look was evident and she said nothing. For a long moment Rollo began to fear that he had overstepped his boundaries but it quickly dissolved faster than sand in a river as Raksha’s face began to contort into one of laughter.

“I did not know you had it in you to finally make your move.” She laughed out, her ears pulled back as the light danced in her eyes. “It was about time.”

She raised her head to meet his as she gave him a small lick on the underside of his chin.

“Was I that obvious?” Rollo let out

“Crystal.” Raksha let out “It was clear it was more than just my sister.” She chided out as Rollo scrambled off of her.

“Well then. I guess not much needs to be said.” He mumbled out as he looked away.

“You’re right...my princess.” She said, voice serious before she bursted out laughing again at the end as Rollo stared at her for a few moments before joining in with his own laughter.
