Description

Wall.e woke up the following morning with a sore throat. She had spent the evening after E.v.e.'s shutdown trying to rouse her from her slumber without success, and eventually fallen asleep next to her. Having tried everything from repeatedly shouting E.v.e.'s name to pouring cold water on her to playing the trumpet as loudly as she could, Wall.e was now convinced that E.v.e. was truly unconscious and that she could only wait for E.v.e. to wake up on her own. In the meantime, Wall.e resolved to keep her company and maybe try to wake E.v.e. again later. She carried E.v.e. up to the roof of her truck and sat down next to her, sighing wistfully. Suddenly E.v.e. began to make an electronic hum. Wall.e jumped up and waved a hand in front of E.v.e.'s visor, hoping that this was her waking up after last night's bizarre events. It wasn't- instead, E.v.e.'s hum was cut off with a short beep, followed by silence. Being unable to think of anything else to do, Wall.e asked E.v.e., (What was that noise you made just now? I don't understand what it meant, or if it meant anything at all...) She then sat down again, pulling the solved Rubic's cube, and a 4 by 4 version of the same cube that she'd found earlier that week out, intending to try to solve them herself while she waited. Wall.e spent the entire morning, and a good chunk of the afternoon attempting to solve the Rubic's cubes. She solved them just as she heard the rumble of distant thunder. Wall.e realized that a downpour was coming, and told E.v.e., who was still dormant, that she was going to get some umbrellas.

That evening, Wall.e stood next to E.v.e., holding an umbrella over her. She had a pile of spare umbrellas nearby. Suddenly, lightning struck the umbrella, giving Wall.e a painful shock and a full recharge, and destroying the umbrellas membrane. Wall.e closed the skeleton, and dropped the umbrella, already reaching for a spare. Lightning struck the spare as she opened it, again prompting her to drop it and pick up a new umbrella. Wall.e would keep watch over E.v.e. and keep replacing umbrellas throughout the night.

The next few days saw Wall.e taking E.v.e. out on various pretend dates, as she'd come to realize that E.v.e. was unresponsive due to her directive having something to do with the seedling, though Wall.e was still having trouble figuring out what that could be. She first took E.v.e. on a boat ride up the Hudson, serenading her with a selection of love songs as she paddled. Next, she took E.v.e. on a long walk down the beach, showing her a collection of assorted shells, pebbles, and shed dragon scales, claws, and teeth. The following evening, Wall.e sat E.v.e. on a bench while she etched a heart with "Wall.e + E.v.e." inside it onto the side of a lamp post with her laser. Wall.e then sat down next to E.v.e., and watched the sun begin to set. While the sun sank below the horizon, Wall.e remembered the shot of Cornelius holding Irene's hand in "Hello Dolly!", and wished that she could hold E.v.e.'s hand, even just once. She unknowingly reached for E.v.e.'s hand, briefly pulling her arm out from its curled up position. E.v.e.'s arm then snapped back into position, trapping Wall.e's hand. Wall.e struggled to free her hand, falling off the bench, hitting her head on the garbage can at the foot of the lamp post, and accidentally shaking the bulb out of its socket.
