NOTE: PLEASE READ ==> Lol. I'm flattered, but I don't have the time, patience, or fortitude to look at your OCs and tell you how to fix them. xD Just read up on the tutorial and compare your OC with what we're saying.Full view to really be able to read it. VERY TEXT HEAVY.
A collaborative effort between myself and my good friend *Goldenkitsune-Queen
This here, boys and girls, is how to make a decent, My Little Pony OC, while keeping away from the things that make them total Marysues. We see far too many examples of just plain BAD characters, and so, we made this. Use the information here as a sort of guideline when creating your OC.
I know it's very text heavy, but the info is good and something to really keep in mind when making your OC.
I did most of the writing, with a few pointers and much help from *Goldenkitsune-Queen and a few others in the group I run.
*Goldenkitsune-Queen is responsible for the wonderful illustrations and, again, a big help on the text based content as well.

He watches over the Everfree because he does not want to see others suffer as he has.
He feels it is his duty to do this as he has the ability, he could just as easily turn the other way but does not.
I don't really know how to describe his characteristics.(I RP with him from time to time)
He's somber, but in a more sagely way. The ponies he has saved/turned aside he teaches what he can.
His only real desire is to help ponies.

Lololololol. Maybe as a child he was tormented by the sound of badly played guitars, so now when he hears one he turns into celestial nightmare robo luna! His hair grows longer and looks like a rainbow and he gets a horn like a unicorn but it's a robot horn which makes him more powerful than normal unicorns. Also he has 10 wives and they all love him.

Haha. I tried to make my OC pony ([link] ) possibly as natural and realistic as possible (I really hate seeing overdone OCs all over the place), but as I think about it, her skill of using telekinesis to fly like a pegasus (which was, I admit, a cheater's way to get an alicorn without her actually BEING an alicorn) may be making her a slight Mary Sue. But since I based her personality and traits on my own (with some changes, enhancements etc. along the way), I hope she's a believable and realistic character.
You may want to take a look, but be warned, that's quite a bit of text.

lol, everyone's been linking me their characters. xD I don't have time to look at them all, but be sure to read the section on Unicorns. Basically it says that each Unicorn's magic should center around what their special talent is. Unless your unicorn's talent is flying, they probably shouldn't fly.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Oh well, I guess that an uncommon (uncommon, not very rare or completely unique) exception can happen from time to time (which is probably a huge "no-no" type of statement when it comes to Mary Sues, but still). It can be probably justified by the fact that she's a giant daydreamer, though I imagine that it may not be a good enough excuse.
But I'm not planning to feature her in fanfics anyway, so...

Not trying to sound stupid, but what if your alicorn is a half-breed, and you personally don't consider her royalty? Like, one parent was a unicorn, and the other was a Pegasus?

I think that's happened in the show somewhere? I think the child comes out as either one or the other, not a mix of both. xD;;; That's not how breeding works. xD;;;

I made her an alicorn because she guards the graveyard; magic to protect it from graverobbers, and flight to catch them and whatnot. I guess she could be just one or the other xD

Although an alicorn is expressly forbidden by most readers, given the fact that the only 2 alicorns in the show are goddesses, I think an easy way you could get it to work is have her be a unicorn. Being a guardian, her magic could be related to chasing and incapacitating criminals, so her main spells could be to temporarily give herself wings and an anti-magic field.
Alternatively, she could just be able to bring about complete physical and magical paralysis, so they can't escape. She wouldn't even have to chase them down that way.

That's partially what I was thinking of last night; not the whole magic thing you described, but letting her be able to use magic so she can create temporary wings when the situation needs it.

xD Well, I can't TELL you what to do with your own OC. You can keep it the way you want, really. This tutorial isn't saying "YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE AN OC LIKE THIS". all it's really trying to say is "Here's some good tips on making a well balanced, simple character. you CAN make a character like this, but be warned, if you do, people will look at it and laugh."

yea..she claims to me never heard of any ocs at the time, when she created her, when joined DA never lookedup any ocs..all she could think of was grim reaper or clown oc sure..go read comments, and find mine..its fun read I admit we become friends, she forever kept stealing my ideas of flamette..she didnt even had mother sl still she saw mine, she just had human mother, when read mine did she say same sl as mine! really!

need to you click on you tube more information button to read it all lol..I wort and cant belive, how out of Reaper OCs in MH world, she and I seem to have same plot, when all others dont even come clsoe 1% to mine just odd..and look shes nows making tons of OCs out of wazzu..its like..wait..AND SHE even commision for back when were friends..but then I asked to remove it she openly admit she hated flamette, and this was her drawing i can tell what to do! that so angers me..

Indeed. Heck, my own OC (The one on my avatar) can change her appearance, given on the season. But I don't make her like "OMGZ, I'm so magical and I'm even better than Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia combined with it comes to magic and blah, blah, blah!"
