About Synergy

The Synergy program is designed to provide our members with somebody they can count on for help and readership. The goal is officially to establish a working relationship between two members which both can benefit from and use to realize their full literary talent, but unofficially we'd like for our members to become friends as well.

How does it work?

Members sign up by taking a vow to participate in the interests of personal and community growth. Participants are then assigned in pairs according to mutual interests and literary styles, and each person in a pair will act as a mentor and guide to the other. Participants will be responsible for critiquing their partner's work, and helping with editing and inspiration. Every month, pairs will take part in a club project or contest designed to test their improvement. Future activities may include many pairs working together for large projects, and in this way, we'll make sure everybody has something to do with someone.

Additionally, new to Synergy this year, we are going to have deviants switch partners every month. This way, everyone gets to experience multiple pairs of eyes looking at their writing. It's like a speed dating night, only more fun since we've got literature instead of awkward small talk about the weather. When we post the monthly activities, we'll also post that month's new paired writers.

How much time and effort will this require of me?

We are well aware of the scheduling conflicts this sort of project would pose to participants, and will attempt to keep Synergy activities reasonable for everyone. However, it is certain that commitment will be absolutely required. This project is to help our members improve their writing while getting to know their fellow club members. It will definitely require a concentrated effort to be involved.

Participants can expect to devote several hours to the program, though we will make the activities on a monthly basis to give everyone plenty of time. Because the project is essentially getting to know your partner, critiquing their work, writing and learning from their critiques of it, and working together on the monthly project or contest, you are free to spend the time allotted to you however you like.

When you are busy and don't have much time for Synergy activities, they will be designed so that they do not have to take top priority and can be done easily with minimal effort. We only ask you to remember that what you put into the project is what you will get out of it. Special situations can always be explained to us in a note (we don't bite!) but we'd prefer if you let us know right away so your partners won't be left in the dust.

What kind of activities will we be doing?

The projects/contests themselves will probably alternate between cumulative work, such as writing a certain number of stories for that month, trying to write collaborative pieces, and special challenges, such as reading a story and rewriting it as you see fit. In a way, it depends largely on how active you and your partner choose to be; if our pairs are generally very active, then we'll assign more things for them to do.
