I've been posting some video tutorials to teach aspiring artists my drawing techniques, but I think it's very important to learn from my mistakes as well.

I'm 25 right now, and I've been drawing all my life. I started drawing a lot more and professionally when I was about 19-20. I drew all the time and didn't think much about it. I would draw until I'm in pain, from sitting too long, from not eating because I was in the flow and didn't want to stop. I would get terrible backΒ pains and even heart palpitations from sitting in the same position drawing for so long.

That's when the nails on my right hand started to get weird and lumpy. At first I thought it was a dietary thing, so I took vitamins, went to the doctors, exercised, changed things up but it was too late. It's been years now and 3 doctors later they couldn't fix it.

If it were just ugly nails, I wouldn't really care, but the nails are just the tip of how bad I've been treating my body. One time during a particularly hardcore drawing marathon, my right hand swelled up for a week. Nowadays I try to take it easy and take long breaks in between but the damage that has already been done can't be undone. I can only draw for so many hours in a day before I have to stop or I will get pains from my entire hand, arm, and shoulder.

Now I have a standing desk, ergonomic mouse, hand brace, and all that. I wish I had done these things sooner so I can keep drawing without restraint. I used to update my comics more frequently, but I can't realistically sustain that speed without hurting myself. (Hence I plan on doing a Patreon in the future so I can hire helpers to do some of the comic's background drawings)

In those speed paint tutorials where I paint within 1-2 hours, it may seem like I have it made, dishing out art in hours, but after those hours I have to massage my hand and arm. I can't draw for more than a few hours a day now without hurting.

When I was in college all I could think about is how to improve my skills, practice endlessly, and all that hard work has paid off in some ways but not in others. So please take care of your hands, and your general health. It seems obvious in retrospect but I never thought about it when I was younger that, hey maybe, just maybe, if you overwork and break your body, you won't be able to draw and create all you want anymore.

Take breaks, don't grip too hard, do hand exercises, do general exercises, get ergonomic mouse and a standing desk if you can (I just piled a bunch of books on my regular desk until it was tall enough) These are some of the few ways you can help your hand last in the long run

yeah, but its a bit disrespectful to the artist who wrote the journal. They're trying to help us and warn against something that happened to them, and then you post spam/chainmail.

Wow.

I read in the commentspeople hoping this gets better for you, but if it never will, and all it can do is not get worse, then it would be better for them to wish that doctors will find a cure one day.

So... I guess the only optimism I could add is... well... at least your left hand looks good. So if you get to the point where you can't use your right anymore, maybe your left hand will give you the second chance we all want when we make a mistake of this nature? A chance to start all over from the beginning, but this time being armed with all the knowledge we've collected to this point?

I suspect that the damage may not be truly permanent, or at least not irreversible.Β  My father for years and years had the worst back/shoulder pain and problems.Β  Terribly rounded shoulders, just a mess.Β  Because he's a tall dude and for decades he'd hunch over, bend his neck forward, scrunch into cars to fit and grip the wheel hard, bend over almost 90 degrees to work on a computer, etc.Β  He also probably had some sort of damage from hauling heavy loads at his Dad's construction business starting when he was 14.Β  He had this problem for decades and he'd always ask for back rubs or go to a chiropractor to relieve some of the tension, but he could never really straighten up.Β  He couldn't put his shoulders all the way back and I noticed that he couldn't even fully straighten his arms.Β  Long story short I noticed this and figured that maybe he'd been going about fixing it wrong all these years and the area with the worst pain wasn't necessarily the area with the worst problem so I told him to start stretching his arms and working on rotating his shoulders back and finally badgered him into seeing a physical therapist.Β  Now it's been about two years and he's a lot better still not all the way better or fully normal mobility but he can straighten his arms and his shoulders will go back much farther than before, and hopefully if he keeps up the exercises it'll keep getting better, as the tendons and ligaments and mussels lengthen and shift back into their proper places, and the internal scar tissue breaks up or stretches out.

TL;DR see a physio therapist and learn what exercises will help get your hand and arm back into proper alignment, it really helped my Dad and he probably fucked his arms and shoulders worse than you fucked your arm.Β

I saw your post on tumblr about this. Thank you very much for posting this! I am 21 and I've gone through spurts of obsessiveness over my drawing. Once I drew so long that I couldn't feel my fingers for days. Thank you very much for this, because I've realized just how important it is to take care of yourself. Definitely a no-no to draw until your fingers bleed, and I wouldn't have come to that realization without your help.
So thank you, and keep posting beautiful art.

I developed that issue after crushing my middle and ring fingers in a door. Sadly it also affected how long I'm able to hold a pen because of deformities in the skin above the nail.

i've never been a strong writer so thats no big loss. sometimes i doodle and my hand aches for a while. but as far as their look, i dont think it's going away. they've looked the same for several months now. they're definitely better than the first part of this past year. it's just a constant reminder to keep my fingers clear from the quarter inch dicer. might as well have hit them with a rubber mallet haha

Β Thank you for your thoughtful advice, it's really important for young artists to remember to take care of themselves as they often don't realize the consequences of mistreating your body

Also, isn't it more difficult to draw while standing? Or do you just get used to it?Β

Thank you so much for this! I dropped out of art college THREE TIMES because of chronic tendinitis in both wrists. I have the braces and I exercise, but I will change my desk to a standing desk too after reading your advice. I'm 25 as well but have a lot of work ahead of me since I took a few years off from art and didn't come back until a year ago when digital painting became more affordable *since traditional makes hands swell up in minutes). I won't be professional for a while but these tips help a lot, thank you!

+1 to a standing desk. As a writer I would be crippled without mine. Make sure to invest in a good rug or floor mat though or your legs will ache something fierce.

So, I am a beginning artist. Like for a couple months I have been trying to draw daily and only started committing a few days ago. Even though it's only Day 4, I am starting to spend all my time drawing non stop hoping that if I spend hours drawing I'll improve quickly. I decided pretty late I want to draw professionally (I am 16) but I think I'll take it a but easy. I will work hard but I will give myself a break from time to time.

bitsyart In reply to VanArt94 [2015-12-14 20:28:54 +0000 UTC]

I got a journal, where I have covered a bit of it^^:Β  bitsyart.deviantart.com/journa…

I get my own jobs from Danish childrens book publishers. In Denmark there are only a tiny few job posts for ilustrators a year, but fortunately, only a tiny number of Danish artists know how to write good applications/sales copy - so I often get the jobs in front of others more seasoned artists. I only rarely contact publishers unsolicited, but thats definitely also a way to go.Β

My best tip is this: Learn how to write excellent, mouth-watering e-mails, so your words persuade the clients to pick you!Β
Style and technique are of course super-important aswell - and you need to present your work on a proper website - but it should all go along with brilliant sales copy. If you cant write, you will seldom get the jobs in the publishing world - no matter how awesome you are.Β

You can get the writing knowledge from books (like the books from author SpeakerSue), blogs etc - and practice As I used to be a copywriter it comes natural to meI already knew how to do it.Β

On Deviantart its very different though Here its about popularity, favorites, general exposure, but as soon as you get out to agents and publishers, your words are 50% of the deal.Β

and lastly: My deviantart-account is my MLP/Disney-fangirl-playground^^ So I dont post my childrens books work here. If you want, I can send a link to my portfolio in a private note. (I dont want to share it here, so that awful person can see it and harass me there)

About a year ago I developed a weird nail deformation on a couple of fingers as well, and no amount of balanced diet or otherwise taking care of it would improve them at all.
I also suffered from horrible shoulder/arm pains and heart palpitations from endlessly drawing in the same position.
