I just got my FairyLand Minifee Active Line ball joint doll [link] yesterday! (This is the specific one I got [link] minus the clothes.... so naked and $200 cheaper! )
I've been wanting one for years to use as lighting reference for my semirealistic styled paintings and now I finally have one 
I couldn't wait to try it out so here's the first colored sketch of my lighting practice drawings. There are others but I'm too lazy to post them now, maybe later XD
Of course a doll can never replace a real human body but this is very handy when you just can't find a good reference. Before this, I almost never use reference when I draw, which is bad because it's harder to improve that way.
I think the Fairyland Minifee Active Line is probably the best BJD out there for this kind of purpose since it has a lot of joints and can hold many poses that other dolls can't. I got a boy doll because he looks like a girl and the girl dolls are just way too girly XD My only dislike is the head, which is really childish and almost alien looking (without the wig) compared to the body [link] (<-- so creepy) I plan on sculpting my own head to put on there XD I'll take pictures when I'm done.
Oh, I'm sure you all know this character from Project WE by now? I tend to draw this person naked all the time which makes no sense because it doesn't happen in the story. And I'm not a pervert so...I don't know! XD
Now back to commissions and Knite!
PS: in case you still haven't heard. WE is put on hold until I finish Knite so no new answer in this post.

I like this a lot, the pose, the hair, and I'm not even gonna try and explain the way the carving [it is carved, isn't it... or maybe I'm a sadist] and the blood affect the overall mood.

absolutely! i personally think BJDs are good for practicing! i've been using photos of bjds to practice on perspectives, poses etc!

i got my very first BJD recently too! i just LOVE them for referencing poses! If i would've got mine with all the clothes and stuff, she would've cost 500$ too XD
so i plan on making her clothes!

And looking at the lighting on recent semi-realism paintings you've done vs the lighting on this... wow. Even without reference you were still continuously improving, but now with the BJD for reference it'll be even more apparent.
(one of the more significant things I notice that's adding to the realism here is the color variation in the skin shadows)
Nude art does not equal pervert at all, even though that sadly tends not to be public opinion. The human body is the human body, and there's nothing wrong about drawing/painting it. I mean, nude is more "natural" than clothed anyways. Plus it's sometimes easier because you don't have to think about what clothes to put the person in, and you can practice drawing their body-type so that when you draw them clothed without the face/hair showing...it's still clear which character. And sometimes it's more interesting to draw a character naked. XD
Anyways, this piece reveals that this character binds their chest, which isn't something one could figure out from other drawings/paintings of them that you've posted. Whether or not it's significant to the storyline, it's still interesting to know. And because the character is shown flat-chested in other pieces (and dressed in a way that makes them seem to have narrower hips and a less "curvy" waist) I'm guessing the binding isn't a "I just randomly stuck a bandage into this sketch" thing, and that the character prefers those features to not be as noticeable.
...The other day a friend of mine was saying "Why is it that all the artist people I know are always drawing naked people?!"

Congrats on getting a BJD though! Though I think you getting one is perhaps not the reason that you are interested in getting one is because of the interest into joining into the hobby, and just using the doll as some sort of mannequin. Then I can't really say anything to that. (But I do hope that is not the case!)

BJD's are REALLY good to use for drawing, fashion, and plain out photography. I can't wait to see what other art and photography you create with it.
