History:

Sovereign is created as replacement and supplement ship for classes like Ambassador, Excelsior and Galaxy. Its design was copied from that of Excelsior but on much larger and more modern scale. The original plans for large battleship like Sovereign dates back in 2320's when relations between Klingon Empire and Federation degraded significatly, however with sacrifice of USS Enterprise-C at Nerendra III battle against Romulans, where Enterprise was destroyed by saving Klingon colony, things changed. Klingons take this honorable act seriously and ease their tensions toward Federation, finally opening real peace talks and road toward peace. Sovereign project as well some others were abandoned. After Wolf 359, things changed again, Starfleet realized that this new enemy is far more powerful then any other factions in Alfa quadrant. Forty ships couldnt stop a single cube. Projects that were previously abandoned were quickly brought back (Defiant was one of new projects not old), Sovereign originally to be larger sister ship to Excelsior was drasticly changed, its entire design re-done.

Prototype USS Sovereign was laid down and was under construction from 2369 to 2371 when was finally launched. At the time it was one of most advanced and most armed Starfleet ship ever. Ship proved itself two years later, as second member of its class USS Enterprise-E played important role in late part of the battle against the Borg (battle which was callled "Battle of Sector 001"), in which Enterprise and knowledge about the Borg by its captain, Jean-Luc Picard lead Starfleet to be victorious. Not only that ship was capable to hold its own against the Borg, but also due advanced systems (and help of lieutenant Data) resist Borgs atempt to penetrate shields. Lt. Data later created algoritam that was used on all Starfleet ships, that prevents Borg to break into Starfleet systems and adopt, this algoritam was further improved by joint work between Lt. Data and Seven of Nine in 2379 (two months before Nemesis).

Class was battle proven during Dominion war, although not deployed in areas where few ships of the class could be destroyed, only in largest and strongest fleets, this units would be present. Class didn't lost single member during the war and score impressive rate of over two hundred and twenty five ships destroyed. (for seven ships i total it was superbe only Akira manage to pass this but thanks to its massive numbers).

Sovereign was very well armed and protected and this increased even more during 2378 and 2381 upgrades. It has powerful warp core, one of most effective shields and state of art weapons, this makes Sovereign effective battleship, however although powerful as warship Sovereign is also excellent deep space and diplomatic ship, Enterprise-E itself made contact with over dozen new species.

Originally this ship was created as replacement for older ships, but many of those ships remain in service after Dominion war, simply because Starfleet lost to many ships and couldnt afford retirement of even older ships. A small group of Excelsiors and Akiras would usually formed around one Sovereign and form a strong battlegroup, as number of Sovereigns continue to grow this ships become more and more deployed all around the Federation space, repacing Excelsiors on more dangerous spots. Although its big and expensive, thanks both to its combat and exploration capabilities and Admiral Victor Murdock reformation plans, it allows Sovereign to be built in larger numbers. Class had extensive use against Odonans in 2381, again not a single member was lost. Two ships were sent to Delta quadrant in 2383 as part of relief battle group that replace the first group that came a year and half earlier, USS Yamato and USS Cortez-A were part of defense fleet and also exploration group for Delta quadrant from 2383-2385. Due number in service, Sovereign can be called backbone of heavy capital ships.
