Description
No longer I pretendThe staircase I descend
Will lead me anywhere but my unscripted end
[...]
No longer I defend
The choices I pretend
Could make amends that heal the loss of precious time
My conscience paralyzed
Against the rising tide
Of haunting memories that drown a wasted life
I was listening to Magnum Bullets and this mental image wouldn't leave me alone...
Gaster (c) Undertale: watch that last step, it's a doozy

feel bad for him
....yet not bad enough to say he doesn't deserve every milisecond of this for even *thinking* of hurting those two.

Would you say the same about Asriel?
Because as it turns out, Asriel hurt Sans and Papyrus and more.

And I also failed to mention, I never hated either of them. It isn't a matter of hate.

Of course I say the same about Asriel, and I see your point in that way. But there are so many differences. Like Flowey having no soul lashing out in anger and Gaster fully in control deciding to hurt children.

Hamycch In reply to Tired0wl [2020-03-26 18:37:37 +0000 UTC]
Asriel lacked a soul, yes, but he was still fully in control of himself.
He still knew what he was doing, he was even hesitant to start doing it (like Gaster), and he still decided to hurt Frisk, and everyone else.

Makes me wonder what exactly would everyone (that was hurt by them) would want to be done.
Cause that is about it, maybe 100 years would pass and just nobody would care anymore.

Writing so many comments
Flowey even appears at the end of the pacifist ending to ask (Chara, presumably) not to reset. Heβs still capable of doing good things and he still knows right from wrong, yet he still chose to behave the way he did.

If you wouldnβt hate Asriel for everything he did, you shouldnβt hate Gaster for everything he did. Simple.

He's not just pure evil; he's someone who, after going through his own trauma and having to deal with terrible circumstances, went on to make terrible choices. What he does to Sans and Papyrus shouldn't be defended, it's awful and he deserves what he gets. But, it's ok to root for him to not make those bad choices in the first place, and to hope for a timeline where he ends up ok instead of going down such a dark path.
That's what I love about handplates. Even if it's not what the main story is really about, all the side comics and little snippets of info we get are amazing at exploring the idea of gray morality and people doing bad things because of bad circumstances and not because they just want to cause pain.

Very understandable, I'm currently writing a book where something similar happens to one of my characters. She's born into a world that hates her, and she's doing everything she can to make life more bearable for her younger brother. I won't spoil my book here, but I'm just gonna say that she and her brother need serious hugs like all of Zarla's skelebeans do.

So he deserves to suffer for all eternity all alone ? Its not like he didn't feel bad for his actions, It's not like he tortured them since they were babies, it's not like he separate them, It's not like he had the strength to keep going hurting the skelebros for their entire life. It's not like he's beyond redemption. Sometimes, Undertale fans are veeeeery concerning with their morality especially given the message of compassion and mercy of the game.Β

Feeling bad for his actions or not being as bad as he could have been is not an excuse for what he did. He could've stopped any time, and when he does that's how we get the mercy scenarios where he can be redeemed and things are better. But if he doesn't stop, then his own choices catch up with him and he is erased from the timeline. It's all dependant on his own choices, so yes, he deserves what he got. But I do believe people can be redeemed, so long as they change their ways.
Perhaps you could argue that the punishment shouldn't be so steep, but you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the vast amounts of pain he caused the brothers. The mercy scenarios are my favorite, I want him to make good choices and become a better person, but if he refuses to change then I don't feel any remorse for him because he brought it entirely on himself.
It's not a simple, clear cut, black and white. And as I was saying in my original comment, that's what I like about handplates.

Where did i say that it excuses his actions ? I'm just saying that Gaster clearly felt bad about his actions and clearly had no streght to keep hurting them for the entirety of their life while he's condemned to suffer for all eternity even if he regrets his actions. Justice isnt eye for eye logic and we don't know if Gaster would continue to keep hurting the skelebros when Papyrus saved him. Maybe he would change his ways latter on, maybe he'll figure out that it was a waste of time, considering this we shouldnt jump into conlusions so quickly. He was still redeemable and Alphys found the brothers so it was impossible for him to keep hurting them even if he wanted to.
" I don't feel any remorse for him because he brought it entirely on himself."
Why does it prevents you from feeling bad for him? And then you should ask Zarla to stop make pictures with a clear attempt to make us feel made for him
