The moments of mercy or weakness are the worst. They just make things harder for everyone.
Someone wrote a fic for this awful AU and it had Papyrus steal the Rubik’s Cube after an IQ assessment, which brought this little scene to mind. Later Gaster told himself that giving them the cube would help them practice for future tests, thus doing so was entirely practical and reasonable.
Poor Papyrus having a tough time lately, though Sans isn't looking too hot either. He's in the tube again since he's close to death and the tube is keeping him alive.
If it's not clear, the X's are made of a single color on each side. The forcefields are the same ones you see around Hotland, the ones that only turn on when you get close enough.
How DID Papyrus get the cube is the real question

You know, out of everything that's happened so far, this is still the toughest one for me to read. Papyrus is so, SO desperate to make Gaster happy with him, in spite of everything he's done to them. And Gaster's flinch when he says he's sorry...man, there's just so much going on here.

This part of the story is still a mystery at he moment. Zarla is making the comics out of order. At this point Gaster has already broken Sans' eye and he recovered from that (or at least woke up, anyway), so whatever happened to him here is after the first eye disaster. We'll find out what whenever she picks up this story thread

So here is an interesting thing. Everything is made of magic in the underground. That's why monster food converts straight to energy when you swallow it (and why Sans and Papyrus can eat at all). It's also why monster clothes appear disappear like they do.

I was thinking "Second time's a charm" and "Whoops!", but in "Whoops!", Papyrus approached Sans as if he had first seen Sans' bad condition now.
But here, and in "This will come in handy later", he is aware of his dying condition, and even sees him in it in "This will come in handy later".
So this state here HAS to be something else!
