Description

Stave’s rest was home to many beautiful coastlines. Some were decorated with pearly white sand, others had massive dunes, perfect for sliding down. But one of the most beautiful had to be round the back of the island, about a 20-minute fly or 40-minute walk from town. Though there was little sand, giant cliffs towered over the water, and when the sun set, light filtered through the valley, making a wonderful scenic spot.

That was where PiMi and Kazoo had gone that evening. Even in winter, the tropical archipelago never really got cold, only a bit nippy on the worst of days, leaving almost every clear day a great picnic opportunity. So they’d taken some packed dinner, PiMi had brought their painting supplies, and set off.

PiMi sat, happily painting the scenery and munching away on his dinner. Kazoo, on the other hand, was very restless- as she had been a lot lately. She’d let out a sigh, kick a rock, rinse and repeat. It was getting very annoying.

“What’s gotten into you, Kazoo?” PiMi asked, leaning back from their painting and turning to face their sister.

“Nothing.” Kazoo lied. She kicked a rock and sighed again.

“Don’t be difficult.”

“You sound so much like papa.” Kazoo let out her biggest sigh yet, before continuing, “Why do you wanna know anyway?”

“Because you’re my sister and I care for you. And your moping is really ruining the mood.”

“Oh, so I need to be happy all the time for your aesthetic only?” She remarked.

“Yes, why else.” They replied sarcastically. “Now tell me what’s bothering you. I won’t tell anyone, promise.”

“When did you become such a bossy boots? I thought that was my job.” She grumbled, curling up in a ball. She inhaled as if about to speak, but stopped, in deep thought.

“Come on, just blurt it out!”

“PiMi, have you ever noticed how much papa lies?”

“Uh. No??”

“Like, every time we ask him where he came from, before he moved to stave’s rest, he’ll get all nervous and divert the subject. And how he refuses to talk about his scars. And why does he get so moody during halloween?? It just doesn’t add up.”

“Kazoo, that’s not lying.”

“Well sor-ry, mister ‘just blurt out what you’re thinking,’ that I don’t have a dictionary with me right now. I just think it’s really weird.” She jabbed an accusatory talon at her brother, who sighed in defeat.

“I get what you’re saying. But does it matter that much to you?”

“Yes? Like, what if he’s secretly a serial killer or something-”

“KAZOO. He’s our father, don’t say such nasty things.”

“But you get what I mean, right? Why does it have to be a big secret from us?”

“People can have secrets, Kazoo.”

“But our father’s past shouldn’t be one of them!” She replied, her voice raising as she got more and more invested in the conversation. “...If he loves us so much, he should tell us his story. You don’t get scars like that from childhood injuries. Besides-”

“Besides what?”

“PiMi… I want to know more about my family.”

“...” PiMi looked heartbroken. It had never been a secret that Kazoo was adopted, but he couldn’t think of her as anything other than a blood sister.

“Nonononono- I don’t mean it like that!! You’re still my brother!” She said, hastily correcting herself. “It’s just that not knowing is eating me alive. Even if my parents were horrible people, it’d be better to know than to live forever unaware. It’s eating me, PiMi.”

“...”

“You’re not… Gonna tell papa, are you?”

“Of course not. It’s just… I think you’re too young to be worrying yourself like this.”

“It’s not me! If he could just… tell us about himself-”

“Maybe he’ll tell us when we’re real adults.”

“We are, pretty much-”

“You still sleep with your baby blanket.”

“Do NOT bring my bankie into this.”

“Ok, ok!”

“...Just, back me up if I ever ask him, okay? Promise?”

“I’ll try my best.”
