Description
My entry for the Speak Up! Draw This In Your Style Event by Rebecca Burgess ! My first exposure to their work was their comic thread on meltdowns and shutdowns for Autistic Comic Takeover in April, which was Autism Acceptance Month. That thread also introduced me to Rebecca's ongoing webcomic The Pauper's Prince and upcoming graphic novel Speak Up, both of which feature autistic main characters. After reading The Pauper's Prince and Rebecca's previous comics, titled The Song Collector (autistic MC) and How to Be Ace: Navigating asexuality (autobiographical graphic novel), I was looking forward to Speak Up more than ever. When I heard about this Draw This In Your Style Event, I wanted to do something Pokémon-themed because Mia's noise-cancelling headphones made me think of Whismur 's Soundproof Ability . That's why I colored her headphones to look like the flaps that cover Whismur's ear canals. I also wanted to reference a music-themed Pokémon, so I went through the list of moves affected by Soundproof to find one. I settled on Meloetta because its ability to switch between its Aria and Pirouette Forms through the use of its signature move, Relic Song , reminded me of Mia's double life as an online singer named Elle-Q. I gave Mia a necklace based on Meloetta's headpiece not only as a reference to Meloetta itself, but also as a reference to the necklace Mia chews on as a form of stimming.
Speak Up! releases on September 13 and is currently available for pre-order.
