My bio parents aren't dead, but they did live an hour and half away from my aunt, the one who adopted me. Every time they threatened to call my mom, I never failed to pull the "she's an hour and a half away" card. That never worked to get me out of trouble, because my uncle is the other contact on the list. But it was still a delight to see their confusion.

Also, one thing I love about Chinese shows and movies: if there's an adoption, the kid is almost always adopted by their extended family, like aunts or uncles. I've never seen that in American shows or movies.
